Six Out Of Eight Isn’t Too Shabby

My predictions for the Golden Globes weren’t perfect but they were pretty good. I missed calling “The Social Network” for Best Picture/Drama (I went with “The King’s Speech”) and I picked Johnny Depp instead of Paul Giamatti in the Best Actor/Comedy category, but otherwise I was right on the money. Who wasn’t on the money was Ricky Gervais as the show’s host. I enjoy snark as much as the next person, but he was repulsive. There’s no need to make everyone in the room feel uncomfortable, and that’s what he did with his mean-spirited “jokes.” I doubt very much if he’ll be back next year.

My dinner was a hit: grilled steak, roasted potatoes, zucchini/tomato gratin, Caesar salad and the same chocolate cake I made for Thanksgiving.

Meanwhile, I see the Jets beat the Patriots. I don’t follow football, but congrats to the Jets fans among us.
As for the Yankees, maybe this will be the week we hear from Andy Pettitte? Oh, wait. I forgot. I’ve already said goodbye to him and vowed not to mention him again. My bad. I guess I haven’t gotten him out of my system after all.

My wife was bang on with the Social Network because King’s Speech will clean up at the Oscars. I’m glad Giamatti won for Barney’s but he didn’t thank Hoffman?

Gervais was too mean spirited, but I still think he’s great, but yeah, a little over the top.

I’m glad the Jets won. Don’t like the Patriots. That cake looks great!!!!

I didn’t watch the Golden Globes (I’m not really much for award shows) but it seems Ricky Gervais is being universally panned. Am I the only one who thought the Social Network was boring? The Jets game on the other hand was awesome! They are a bunch of loud mouths, but they are from New York and they beat New England. I’ll take it!

I have been out of touch so excuse me if you’ve already covered this, but I am not all the excited about Rafael Soriano. Maybe he will be great and change my mind, but it seems like too much money and too many years for a reliever. Also I don’t like that it will cost us a draft pick. I hope Ivan Nova gains the ability to get people out after the 5th inning this season.

You did very well with your predictions Jane. I agree with you about Ricky Gervais. He was insulting and you could tell that he did not go over well with the audience. I thought he was very inappropriate. Is he so out of touch?
I’m a Jets fan, so yesterday’s game was very exciting.
Now – if only Andy Pettitte would give us some good news…

Your wife was a better forecaster than I was on Best Picture, Mark. I figured the Foreign Press would go for the Brits, but I missed that one. Come to think of it, you’re right about Giamatti. He thanked an awful lot of people but he did forget Dustin, didn’t he. Surprising. Gervais is a funny guy but he didn’t understand that you can’t insult everybody in Hollywood when you host one of these things. Ask Chris Rock, never to be seen as host again. The cake was great. Foolproof recipe.

Yes, you are the only one who thought Social Network was boring, cheshirecat! LOL. It was anything but boring to me. The script just zipped along and held my attention from start to finish. Thought the acting was great too. I feel this way about Soriano: we needed help in the pen and we got it. Does the signing have the same weight as getting a good starting pitching? No. Does the deal come with possible problems? Yes, but so does every deal. As for the money, let the Steinbrenners worry about that. The Yankees saved a bundle on Lee and will save more on Pettitte.

You could definitely tell Gervais wasn’t going over well, Freya. Every time they panned the audience, people sat stone faced or with awkward looks at an event that’s usually so loose and carefree. Congrats on your Jets. Must have been so exciting!

Ricky Gervais was offensive? Maybe I should’ve watched even though I hate awards shows.

Fans, who’s going to 2011 Spring Training in Tampa? Last year I met Diane? and her twin sister at The Bahama Breeze.

‘Are you going this year? 3/12-3/19/2011
Joe R.

I thought you were going to watch, Paul, since you said yesterday that you liked Gervais. You might have been the only one who thought he did a good job last night.

I would have piked Johnny Depp too. Fine job with your predictions. I still think Andy Pettite will return for one more year. The Yanks need pitching too badly. I’m not a Jets fan, but I’m glad they handed New England some humble pie. That was too cool!

Jane,
For someone who is so techno-savvy, I thought you might have popped “the Social Network” down in sharpie on your home ballot.
Amazing just how far entrenched Facebook and even Twitter is into so many lives. I admit freely that I do not post all the time, but then again who would care if I was eating a pulled pork sandwich unless it was out of this World good.
But then again, I hear John Travolta wants to finance “Battleship Earth 2: The Hunt for Rick Gervais ” pronto. Hear even Tom Cruise wants to go to the “Danger Zone” on the British comic.

I don’t think I’m going to spring training this year, Joe R. – I have a book to write and may have to miss it – but I’m much others on here will be going. Anybody?

You think Pettitte will pitch, diehard? Maybe yes, maybe no, but I’ve stopped hoping.

I loved The Social Network, Renegade, and sang its praises on this blog after I saw it. But I was trying to get into the heads of the Hollywood Foreign Press and I thought they’d go for the British movie The King’s Speech. The Oscars will be a whole different ballgame; I’ll probably pick Social Network for that. If I were either Travolta or Cruise, I’d have somebody break Gervais’ kneecaps.
