What Will Tuesday’s Team Building Activity Be?

According to LoHud, Joe Girardi is planning something for the Yankees’ off day on Tuesday. Last year, he roped everybody into playing pool together and it was said to promote a spirit of bonding and togetherness.

(Mo won, naturally.)
So what will this year’s activity be? Here are five suggestions for Joe.
1) Skydiving.
skydiving_blog.jpg
OK, maybe not. Could be dangerous, especially for CC, whose parachute might snap and send him hurtling to the ground. Not a good way to start the season.
2) Trapeze.

trapeze.jpg
Talk about a way to build trust. On the other hand, I’m just not sure I trust Jorge to catch A.J. Not until they’ve worked together a few more times.
3) Body Surfing.
body.surf.jpg
I know it’s been a little chilly in Florida lately, but it’s not the North Pole (or even New York). Girardi could have everybody grab a board and hang ten. Whoever rides the most waves without getting water up his nose wins.
4) Cooking.
Chefs.jpg
What better way to establish closeness and camaraderie than to have the players prepare a gourmet meal together – sort of an Iron Chef competition. Girardi and the coaches could be the judges, and whoever pleases their palate would become the Yankees Iron Chef.
5) Watch Avatar.
3D.theater.jpg
It’s the safest, injury-free choice of all the activities. All the players would have to do is sit through the movie together wearing 3D glasses and act riveted. Whoever doesn’t fall asleep wins.
I’ll be looking forward to hearing which option Girardi picks. Any guesses?

So funny Jane. I don’t know about the bonding stuff.
It’s not like they don’t spend a lot of time with each other during the season. They probably spend more time with each other than they do with their families.

Cat, normally I’d agree. But last season the Yankees had a lot of new faces (CC, AJ, Tex, etc), plus off the field distractions (A-Rod) when spring training started. So I think Girardi was wise by taking the team away from the job and letting them “play” together. This year there are more new faces, so I don’t think it would hurt to do the same thing.

I think that Twister is the best way to go. Fun for all ages! The Yankees can have a good ole’ fashioned bonding time while working on their flexibility!

Twister sounds awesome, but possibly dangerous… what if CC fell on people?I’d think something along the lines of mini-golf. You know, the ones where you can choose what color balls you hit with. If nothing else, it’s an exercise in artistic creativity, and hitting it into the mouth of the crocodile.~Anahttp://enternight.mlblogs.com

Fun for all ages, Serena. So both Mo AND Joba could enjoy it. LOL. I’d pay to see them play Twister.

All kidding aside, Ana, I have a feeling CC is more limber and fit than anybody. (I wouldn’t want him to fall on me though.) Miniature golf is a possibility, but somebody might hit somebody in the eye with the little ball and then where would we be?

i loved Avatar! Not a fan i presume? ;)

Ahhh so funny!

In the spirit of the Olympics, I think CURLING! Not as dangerous as skydiving, and the guys can get some practice with the brooms (I’m looking forward to lots of sweeps this season).

If it is Avatar I hope none of them die of heart attack (someone did in Taiwan… so I heard). Anyway, I can’t believe it’s been a year already cuz I remember when you posted about this last year. You should see how many white hairs I’ve gained in that time!

I don’t know, Jane. I think I’m going to recommend Karioke (how the heck do you spell it anyway???). I’m sure Dave could suggest some songs for some of the individual players. In the end, I would like the whole team to get up and sing The Black-Eyed Peas “Let’s Do It Again” — come on 28!!!

Hmmm….maybe it’s because I’ve been stuck inside for a few days but what about a board game tournament? There would be no danger of anyone getting hurt…unless a fight broke out over Parcheesi or something. I do also like the Karaoke idea that someone else mentioned…

You think the activity of “bullying the GM into a contract extension for the manager” would be too obvious?

I like the skydiving. Just without parachutes ;)
Go Red Sox.
Total Bases

I haven’t seen Avatar, Mimi, so I can’t judge the movie. I only know it’s long, is basically about the special effects and doesn’t move me enough to actually get to a theater and watch it!

Curling…brooms…you’re a genius, ladyjane. It’s perfect! I wish I’d thought of it.

Someone died watching Avatar, Jeff? Is the movie that exciting? I did do the “What activity will Girardi pick” post last year. Good memory. I hope I picked different activities this time or I should hang up my blogging shoes.

Actually, karaoke is a fabulous idea, Diane. They’d all have to sing the same song and then Girardi and the coaches could play Simon Cowell and critique them. Love it. “Let’s Do It Again” is an excellent choice.

It’s true that nobody would get hurt playing a board game, wirishrose, but I think you have been stuck inside too long. LOL. These guys are too hyper for that. I am too. You couldn’t make me play Scrabble or Monopoly or any of them. I’d go stir crazy.

Yeah, I do think it would be too obvious, Paul. An interesting idea though. They could play “Kidnap Cashman,” take him to an undisclosed location and deprive him of food and water (and his laptop) until he signs Joe’s new contract.

Amusing, Total Bases. Just not if you’re a Yankee fan.

Randy Winning? Interesting typo, Total Bases. The Yankees got Curtis Granderson – a major pickup. And as everyone keeps reminding us, they signed a trio of expensive free agents last year. No need for more.

Haha, just kidding. What do you think of the Yankees offaeason? I thought they would do more. Randy Winning and Javier Vazquez does not do it for me.

I just finished skimming through the papers and they’re pondering the same thing. Most of the writers believe it will be POOL again.
So, – What?… Toga Parties aren’t cool anymore?

Lol…you’re totally right Jane, I have been in the house too long! But good news…today I actually got out! They do need something more active… Maybe bowling? Or kickball or dodgeball? Lol…if they were in NY I’d suggest skiing. Some of the mountains up here got 8 feet of snow in the past few days so conditions are excellent for that.

Pool again, Mike? So boring! I think a toga party would be hilarious and an excellent way to “team build.” But Girardi’s too straitlaced for that.

Congratulations on getting out of the house, wirishrose! I think I read somewhere that bowling was considered but Girardi thought somebody might get hurt? I guess a ball could drop on someone’s foot. Maybe they should just put everybody in a hermetically sealed both for 24 hours.

Haha, my phone has spell check and it turned Winn into Winning! Could it be an omen? Hope not! I am just surprised they didn’t think they needed a hall of famer at every postion.

I’d play video games. Video games are good for relaxing a bonding. That’s my pick. Maybe since they are big leaguers they can get a copy of MLB 10 The Show before it’s release date. (it comes out Tuesday)

Jane,
I would have originally said Deep Sea Fishing, but the weather down here is going to be tossing and turning boats for a few days in they venture into the Gulf of Mexico……And you remember what happened about a year ago (remember the blog?).
And I hope he doesn’t steal the Rays usual Team Karaoke contest idea.
I am thinking it will be infield versus outfield, and starters versus relievers in Team Bowling at Spiltsville in the Channelside area of Tampa.
Nothing like bowling, beer plus a few snacks to release tension, bring out the personal joksters.
Mix that into a semi-competitve sport and you got fun for days.
Could be worse…..Could be a BBQ with a Lawn Dart contest.
I could just see C C Sabathia with one sticking out of a but cheek.

Rays Renegade

It finally stopped snowing, I finally got out of the house, and we finally got our internet back!
This post cracked me up!
I like the Karaoke idea. Too bad Matsui is gone.

AJ and Jorge could do “It Takes Two Baby.” Curtis could do “Centerfield.” Arod could sing “I Can See Clearly Now.” Andy “Hey It’s Good to be Back Home Again.” Brett – “Built for Speed.” Sabathia “When Will You Say Si Si?” Tex “Solid as a Rock.” Robinson “Make New Friends, But Keep the Old.” Swisher “Havin’ a Party.” Vasquez “the Second Time Around.” Joba and Hughes “I Wanna Be Your Man.” Jeter “Captain Fantastic” Mariano “I am the Greatest”

Then Girardi could do the lead on “Over and Over” and the whole team could do the “Ah-mmmm, Ah-mmmm”

Then (not to be mean, but I can’t help it!) They could sing “Johnny Angel” and “My Momma Told Me (You’d Better Shop Around)”.

Melissa

By the way Jane – go see Avatar while it is in the theaters. The plot is lame, and the fighting scenes typical, but the world that James Cameron created is really magical and SO worth going to the theater for. This is NOT a movie that you want to wait for the DVD (my usual way.)
Despite all the drawbacks of it as a movie, it did the real magic a movie is supposed to do and pulled you into a totally different world. It was one of the few movies that I was sorry to see end after over 2 1/2 hours.
Melissa

You really do love those video games, gonzo. But I don’t think the Yankees will go that route. The guys already play them so it wouldn’t be something new and different.

I do remember what happened last year, Renegade. So if the seas are rough, I’d certainly stay away from fishing or any boating activities. Plus, it’s been sort of cold there, right? (Hope it warms up by the time I get there.) Personally, I love bowling. It’s competitive and fun. But as I wrote above, I think I read somewhere that Girardi ruled it out as an injury risk. Maybe the ball is too heavy for the poor little darlings? A dart sticking out of CC’s butt cheek. You are baaad.

So you got out of the house, Melissa? YAY! I bet you were getting cabin fever. Your song melody is truly hilarious and so right on the money for everybody. My favorite is the song for A-Rod. Well, and Damon too. Now you’ve convinced me to see Avatar while it’s still in theaters. I’ve just been dragging my feet about the length of the movie and the James Cameron-ness of it all. But if you say the effects are worth it, I’ll go!

I think it’s worth seeing. My reaction to it was similar to my reaction to “Across the Universe.” I didn’t want to see that movie, thinking that any movie based on Beatles songs with a boy named Jude in it would probably be stupid.
But a friend recommended it. And in the scene in the bowling alley, when they are singing “I’ve just Seen a Face,” I suddenly realized I loved this movie.

Avatar was sort of like that. At the beginning I was thinking “oh, that’s sort of cool effect,” and thinking “eh, it’s okay.” A little later on, I realized I was totally enchanted by the world of Pandora and it was like nothing I’d seen before. Yes, the effects are great, but it’s really the vision of this world that makes the movie good. And like I said, the way it brings you in. It’s like when you are reading a really good book and the phone rings and you sort of “wake up” and realize you’re in your own house and not the world of the main character.

And yes, I had cabin fever bad! So glad to get out today. The snow is too deep and wet to do anything outside in the yard!
Melissa

I know just what you mean, Melissa. You can be watching a movie and thinking it’s OK and then suddenly find yourself completely transfixed and carried away into the experience. That’s why I love the screenings I go to here as part of the film festival. Watching DVDs is convenient and cheap, and I appreciate the option. But there’s nothing like sitting in a dark theater and getting pulled in to a story on the big screen. You really made me want to see Avatar.
