Where Did Cashman Celebrate New Year’s?

The NY Post reported that Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly headed down to the island of Canouan to ring in 2010. How nice for them. The last time I was down there, Raffles didn’t exist and there was no electricity on the island.

But with the Yankees still without a clearly designated left fielder, I was more interested in where Brian Cashman was for New Year’s Eve. We know he wasn’t with Matt Holliday, since the Cardinals are about to announce their deal. And we know he wasn’t with Marlon Byrd, since the former Ranger is going to the Cubs. So where was he? Where is he? And what’s he been doing?

Has he been partying at home in Connecticut?
drunk.partier.jpg
Did he go to Times Square to watch the ball drop with people wearing those oddly shaped blue Nivea caps?
times-sq-crowd.jpg
Has he been planted in front of his TV watching football?

Did he fly to Hawaii to caddy for Obama?

Did he drive up to Sugarbush to learn how to ski?

Or did he end up in Tampa meeting with the Steinbrenners?

Given the fact that there really aren’t any drool-over free agents left on the market, I wonder if he spent the holiday with Brett Gardner explaining to him that he has the job until 2011, at which time it will be handed to this guy.

As for me, I went to a great party on New Year’s Eve. There was lots of food, excellent champagne, interesting people and a roaring fire in the fireplace. But the highlight for me was when I was introduced to a lawyer named Michael Cooney.
“I read about your She-Fan book in the local paper,” he said. “I’m a diehard Yankee fan too.”
Well, talk about a conversation starter. It turns out that Cooney is very friendly with Yankees first base coach Mick Kelleher and stays with him every year when he goes to spring training. I mentioned that Kelleher had been nice to me when I was at a game in Tampa last spring. (Here I am calling out to Mick and here he is smiling at me. That constitutes “nice.” At least he didn’t ignore me or tell me to go back to my seat.)

“I’m going down to stay with Mick in March,” said Cooney.
“Oh, wow. I’ll be down there in March too,” I said. Hint hint.
“We’ll have to get together,” he said. “When we go out to eat, all the other coaches come too. It’s fun to sit there listening to them talk about all the players.”
Uh, yah. I’m so there.

Now, that’s worth a comment! Sounds like you might have an “in” -Jane, what fun! Happy New Year, can’t wait to read all about it in ’10!!!

Hi, Ellen. It does sound like I might have an “in.” I’m trying not to get too excited though, as these introductions have a way of going nowhere. Happy New Year to you!

BTW Jane – glad you brought up those Nivea hats…the pic looks like a scene from Whoville…where’s the Grinch?

John

What was with those hats, John? I was watching CNN and wondering which movie I had stepped into. So weird! Hope you’re having a good holiday weekend.

OUT – STANDING!! What a GREAT tidbit of news…hope hope that your “inside pitch” turns into a big home run come this spring…SO excited for you! You’re wise to not get TOO excited (but I would, if ’twere me), and trust me, we’re all excited for you…and what it would mean for us…! As for The Cash Man…dunno…maybe he was holed up with a bottle o’Bushmills and a gallon jug of coffee somewhere (with a can o’ whipped cream for topping), and he’s now ready to take on ’10. Saw some of the outdoor hockey game classic from Fenway Pahk yesterday…looks better as a hockey rink, except for Schilling’s in-between appearance…if it’s in New York next year with the Washington Caps as opponents, I am SO there…! Meanwhile, hope y’all had a Happy New Year that approached She-Fan’s…!

Wow Jane! An “in” with the coaches! Hm? First coaches, then, maybe, players? Just curious, how is the movie version of the book proceeding?
I heard the rumor about Carl Crawford and checked his 09 stats. 60 steals, .305 BA, 15 homers, 68 RBI, left fielder, pretty good! What does everyone think – worth holding out for one year to get him?
Happy 2010! Kathleen

You’re slowly climbing the ladder. By 2015, maybe you really WILL get that sit down with ARod.

Wow, Jane, wouldn’t that be cool?!? Hope it all works out for you (and vicariously for us).
We spent a quiet New Year’s Eve at home. But after almost 30 years, I’m more convinced than ever that I married the right man. As we watched the ball drop, first they played “Imagine.” Then they switched to “Old Lang Syne.” And then they started playing “New York, New York.” My husband turned to me and said “Hey! They’re playing the Yankee song.”

Melissa

Melissa, your husband sounds like the perfect he-fan! My husband Steve wrapped presents for me for Christmas “from” Tex (a DVD of the World Series highlights), Jorge (Yankee pjs), and of all people, Terry Francona (WS Championship coffee mug!). He said that Francona wanted to show he is a nice guy! Steve also gets the perfect Yankee husband award!
Kathleen

Happy New Year Jane. What a year you had!!! Have a safe and wonderful year.

Dave, who knows if I’ll get to meet Mick for real, but I’m already planning to bring the She-Fan Cam in case he has any exciting tidbits to share. He does seem like a sweet guy. Hope you and your family are feeling a little better.

Kathleen, the movie version – and it’s a very loose adaptation of the book (the heroine is single and engaged, for example) – is at the outline stage. My writing partner and I will start the actual script very soon. Or did you mean the movie version of my novel An Ex to Grind? I’d wait a year for Crawford. But the Yankees will have lots of competition, including the Rays, so it’s certainly not a given that he’ll be putting on the pinstripes. Happy 2010 to you too. (I need to stop writing 2009 on my checks!)

I’m not counting on a sit-down with A-Rod ever, Paul. Well, unless I happen to be hanging out with Madonna who, according to today’s Daily News, he’s still calling and texting.

Melissa, we must be married to the same man! Michael turned to me when they were playing “New York New York” and said, “And the Yankees won.” LOL.

Very cute how Steve wrapped those presents, Kathleen. But the best part is that you got all that Yankees loot. The DVD, the pajamas, the mug. Wow. A nice haul for you.

Happy New Year to you, Cat. I’m looking forward to seeing you at a Dodgers game this coming season.

Access to a real live pro baseball person is a thing of beauty, Jeff. Happy New Year to you too.

And I’m so jealous… even if it IS a Yankee ;-) Happy New Year, Jane!

Peter, it would be great if you could go to Florida. I think the Yankees play the Phillies in Clearwater when I’m planning to be there. Happy New Year to you.

*Hopefully Cashman celebrated New Years with Scott Boras, and finally worked out the kinks in the Damon deal lol… Happy New Year everyone – baseball’s on it’s way!

http://jquist.mlblogs.com/

I don’t think there’s going to be a Damon deal, JQuist. My guess is by next week Johnny will be wearing another uniform at a press conference. But I’m getting more comfortable with Gardner in left. He’ll bat 9th and be fine. Happy New Year to you!

Glad to hear about New Years!! Looks like Sprin Training is gonna be great for you!! I was kidding around with my uncle on New Years about the whole “no left fielder” problem the Yankees had. Of course, he responded that the Yankees have CC, AJ and Andy. Thanks for the reminder, Uncle Kenny. Not funny. Anyways, maybe Cashman was in Hartford on New Years? That’s where I was. Haha, that’s why there were a ton of limos in the area…

Yeah, the “no left fielder problem” isn’t exactly a huge deal, Holly. It’s just been the missing piece of the puzzle, but I guess we’ll see how Gardner takes to the position. Sounds like Uncle Kenny and I would have a lot to talk about!

Good Stuff! These are the kinda stories I like to hear. Happy New Year. I wish you well and continued success while you redefine FAN.

Thanks, Mike. I really enjoyed your trolley ride to the restaurant on your blog. Good stuff indeed. Happy New Year!

I’m not so sure that Cashman is down there giving Damon a massage, Renegade. I have a suspicion that Boras is giving Cashman the royal treatment, since the Yankees already have a #2 hitter and don’t really need Johnny. As for the other CC, I’ve had dreams of him being a Yankee forever, just like I had dreams of Halladay, and look how that turned out. LOL.

Jane,
Just a hint for you…….
Brian Cashman is hidden in the same town just to the right of the gates of Universal Studios giving hammy and foot masages to Johnny Damon at his lakefront home.
He is trying to formulate a back-ended contract for Damon to play LF fo one season as Reed Johnson is playinmg footsies with Cashman, but will not commit to taking his socks off and play for real.
As for CC…………..he hates playing there as a Ray, but sometimes money can pay for really great earplugs so the Bleacher Creatures screams will fade to white noise.
But, you never know………… we still have some time and Andrew Friedman has been boning up on his MSL soccer Wii system to take on Crawford in his Arizona home before Spring Training.
Winner signs for less……….maybe.
