Will The Yankees Sweep The Twins?

twins02.gif
I don’t know. Things could get scary in Minny on Sunday, and I’m not even talking about having to watch endless close-ups of Carl Pavano.
pavano_watches.jpg
I’m not talking about Joe Mauer either, although he does give me hives every time he comes to the plate.
hives2.jpg
I’m not even talking about that crazy ceiling at the Metrodome and how easy it would be for, say, Johnny Damon to lose a fly ball.
Metrodome_ALDS_Oct_2004.JPG.jpeg
I’m talking about the stadium itself. It has no open windows. It’s completely enclosed. It’s like a giant airplane with 100% recycled air, and you know what happens on airplanes. That’s right: people catch a cold. I think that’s why Twins fans wave those Homer Hankies.

They all use the hankies to sneeze into.

The Yankees warmed up at the Dome today and I hope nobody came down with anything contagious. Barring that, I’m looking forward to a great outing by Pettitte, more clutch hitting  by the boys and maybe even a steal or two by Gardner.

I know I’ll be ready for Game 3. I’ll be wearing the exact same thing I wore for Games 1 and 2.
bathrobe.ny.jpg
I’ll be ordering the exact same take-out turkey club sandwich and eating it as soon as the Yankees score their first run.

And I’ll be sitting in the exact same spot on the middle cushion of the white couch in my living room.

With more than a few hours to kill until the first pitch, I decided to leaf through a book I received in the mail today called “New York Yankees IQ: The Ultimate Test of True Fandom” by Tucker Elliot. Imagine my surprise when I turned to page 73 and discovered that “Confessions of a She-Fan” (the book) figured into one of their Yankees trivia questions! Check it out. It would make a fun gift.
The Dodgers just won the NLDS as I finished typing this post. It’s still weird to watch Joe Torre hugging “other” players, but a big congrats to them!

Is that your living room in the photo?

Why wouldn’t another book notify you if using your book in theirs? Congrats on that.

I’m looking forward to Dodgers vs Yankees. Joe vs Joe. And revenge for 1981. [not looking forward to seeing the yankee killer manny ramirez though]

Jane I felt the same way seeing the DODGERS givings congrats to Padilla! And I have to add GO TWINS!!!!

Indeed… as I continue to hope… will it be NY vs. LA??? I got my prayer hat on.. .does that count?

Buz – http://buzblog.mlblogs.com/

Nope. Not my living room, ibrenne, but close to it. A publisher doesn’t have to notify me if they aren’t using an excerpt of the book. In this case, something in my book is simply an answer to a Yankees trivia question. I’d love to see Yankees-Dodgers, but I’m not even going there. We have a lot of games to win and so do they.

By all means, root against the Yankees, wetfeet. Sigh.

Yes, keep your prayer hat on, Buz. It can’t hurt. Your Dodgers played great tonight. Ethier was a total beast! Wow. And Manny finally broke out.

Thanks Jane. The game today was exciting. It was fun to see how the Dodgers seemed to dominate the team that was supposed to sweep them. I hope all those sports writers are now eating their words.

Jane it always cheers me up to hear how supersticious you are because it makes me feel better about my craziness. Your blog entertains and makes me feel accepted! I am looking forward to the game tonite. Unfortunately I think it will be close ( would totally prefer the blow out on this one) but I am confident our boys will prevail. Go Yanks!

Good luck today in the Yankees quest for the Sweep…

Jane: The Shining Twins? Lol, Jane they gave me nightmares! I’ll be sitting in the same spot on my couch, too. I’ll be sitting up leaning on the right arm. I’m ready. SWEEEEEEEEEP!!!

I still can’t believe the Yanks are playing the Tigers. Yanks would love to tee off on Pavano given his history with the team. Wouldn’t surprise me if he pulls himself out with one of his famous injuries just to avoid the humiliation.

Oops, typo. That is, I can’t believe the Yanks AREN’T playing the Tigers. Forgive me for the error, but my team is making me a little crazy these days…

I just think that pavano is the bernie madoff of the MLB which is why they changed the name from Ponzi scheme to pavano scheme. He definetly madoff with alot of Yankee money. I cant help but think of a Yankee/dodgers series and I am really curious about your opinion of joe torre after the book he wrote. The Yankees, I am confident of the sweep but hey, minnesota has Brett Favre.

Cat, I know the sportswriters are eating their words! I read an article this morning about how the Dodgers knocked off two heavily favored teams in a row: the Cubs last year and the Cards this year. You must be so excited!

Glad you know you’re not alone in your superstitiousness, cheshirecat. I think we all have some form of it. I have a friend who does different things depending on each play of the game! But let’s hope my club sandwich does the trick again. If not, I’ll have to move on to egg salad! I think tonight’s game will be a close one too and I’m kind of worried about Pavano. He’s handled us pretty well – galling but true.

Thanks, Peter. Good luck in the Phillies’ quest for a win against the Rockies. I hope the game doesn’t get snowed out again. Yikes.

Do you sit up leaning on your right arm for the entire game, Virginia? I’ve never tried that one! LOL! Whatever works, right? I really want to win this game and be done with those pesky Twins. They’re scrappy like the Angels.

HAHAHA, Steve. I read your first comment three times and thought, Did I get it wrong? Have the Yankees been playing the Tigers and I somehow missed it? LOL! No, it’s the Twins and as I said above, I’m worried about Pavano because the Yanks would like nothing better than to beat him and they can’t start thinking that way. They have to focus on getting good at bats and not trying to do too much. (Wow. Have I spouted enough cliches there?)

“Pavano is the Bernie Madoff of MLB,” arizonacacti. That’s a good one! I haven’t read Torre’s book, so I can’t speak about it with much authority. I don’t think of him as a murderous traitor and I’ll always respect what he did for the Yankees. That said, would I have preferred that he waited to write the book with Verducci until he was no longer managing? Sure. And while there have always been books that take us inside the clubhouse (Bronx Zoo, Ball Four, etc), it’s different for me when it’s the manager whose name is on the book. But I’m still very fond of Torre. He was the skipper for a long, very successful time.

Just holding back a few sniffles… who knows what’s in store for your Yankees… I just promise not to bash them while my foot is in my mouth.

Sorry, Jeff. I know you must be sad about your Cardinals. Does this mean there won’t be any more RSBS posts about the Yankees being chokers?

Come and play with us Pavvy; for-ever…and ever…and ever….

Wearing the same thing? I dunno. When I try things like that, the luck tends to run out with time, which is why I switch it up with fresh luck. Inturpret that as you wish, but Im sporting Yankee shirt #3 tonight.

I wonder if Pavvy is feeling any butterflies, Paul. On the other hand, he’s probably rejoicing at the thought of beating the Yankees tonight.

The luck tends to run out eventually, YHH, but then I just change it up until it gets back on track. The important thing is to delude ourselves into thinking that what we do actually makes a difference! LOL. Let’s go Yankees!

haha Jane!
Love the surperstitions. I wore the same hat during game 1, 2 and 3 and I will have it on again next week.
I have a friend who told me he’s worn the same pair of sox for all three games. I said “ewwwww”

Jane,
How special will this moment tonight be if they have to step over Carl Pavano for their series victory.
Not because of at least 10 million reasons will the Yankee fans celebrate a win over the “P-one”, but because it is a great set of irony that he stands in their way.
Of all people not named David Wells, could there be another guy who could evoke such passion and desire to get a victory than Carl Pavano for the pinstripes?
Should be a great night, and the last night the Big Baggie in Minnesota plays host to a baseball game.
I do not think anyone will miss the Hefty/Glad bags in rightfield, but there might be a few tears that the end came at home amongst the home fans for the Twins.
Sniff,sniff………..I always hated that stadium.

Rays Renegade

Sounds like a lucky hat, Emma. You should definitely wear it next week. I’m wearing the same socks/clothes (not the bathrobe) for tonight’s game, and will drop them in the washing machine when their usefulness expires!

Renegade, there was an article in today’s NY Times about how the Yankees have to forget how they feel about Pavano and just go out there and get good at bats. It referenced Schilling’s “bloody sock” game and how the Yankees hated him and wanted to beat him so badly that they weren’t patient at the plate and lost the game. So let’s see if it turns out to be the last night at the Metrodome. I hope so, but I’ll celebrate only after the last pitch!

hey Jane
it is great to interact with female “crazed ” Yankee fans
i totally understand. we just got back from a wedding reception; my husband had the red sox on his blackberry and there was a huge following each inning. way to go!
i was happy to see a Sox defeat but am anxious about Angels; i still adore Torre and appreciate his management skills. I want the Yanks to go all the way so badly
I want them to win tonight and go on to totally destroy the Angels and take the World Series back!!!!!!!
i have been to many many games and followed faithfully on radio, tv, and computer.

Go Yankees!!!!!!!!!

Nice to “meet” you, bernice. So you made it home from a wedding reception just in time for the game tonight? Good work! I would love the opportunity to play the Angels in the next round, but (as you can see) I’m too superstitious to actually focus on it. If we do beat the Twins, then I’ll be in heaven. I would like nothing more than to win #27! So let’s get step #1 accomplished tonight!

I have my fingers crossed for your team. The Yankees will win again.
http://catlovesthedodgers.mlblogs.com

Its crazy to think our brooms have gathered so much dust…its been what, 10 years? No more! Yankees sweep!

You called it, Cat!!!!! Thanks for the support. The game just ended and the Yanks move on to the ALCS. Wow. Very excited.

We did it, YHH! It was scary there at the beginning, but it ended great. Now it’s back to the Bronx and a rest before the Angels show up. Woohoo!

Congrats on your Yankees win!! good game, but I will have to support the Angles in the next series

Well, wetfeet, I hope you enjoy the rest of the playoffs. Thanks for letting me know where you stand.🙂
