Victorious Over Blue Jays, Yanks Take On Red Socks

red.socks-2.jpg
Sergio Mitre wasn’t an unmitigated disaster in the Yankees’ 8-4 win over the Jays on Wednesday night, but he didn’t last long enough to get the win – or any real vote of confidence from fans.
Sergio Mitre.jpg
He did, however, generate several suggestions for his look-alike, including one from commenter leekru, who insisted he’s the spitting image of celebrity has-been Wilmer Valderrama, except that Wilmer smiles occasionally.
Wilmer-Valderrama.jpg
At first, the offense seemed handcuffed by yet another rookie pitcher (this is the last – I mean last – time I’m spelling Rzepcyzynski), but they manufactured a couple of runs in the second and Swisher hit a bomb in the seventh to tie it at 3-3. The rest came off the Jays’ newly acquired reliever Roenicke. Poor guy. The Yanks singled and doubled him to death.
coffin6.jpg
Damon’s homer in the ninth off Tallet made it unnecessary to use Mo (I didn’t see the need for Hughes either, but don’t get me started). Johnny had three RBIs. I always feel the Yanks are better with him in the lineup, in spite of his often adventuresome play in left field.
damon.left.jpg
The bullpen did its job for the most part, and the Yanks have now won three straight. If only A-Rod would start hitting homers again. I miss his towering shots and his Clydesdale (hat tip: Was Watching) jog around the bases, but he’s got a different #5 hitter behind him in almost every game. It would be nice not to have a revolving door in that spot.
Revolving_Door.jpg
And speaking of A-Rod…
arod_lgl.jpg
…commenter TribeGirl is convinced his double is Daniel Sunjata, who not only stars on “Rescue Me” but played Reggie Jackson in “The Bronx Is Burning.”
Sunjata_Dan63485.jpg
But on to Thursday night’s series opener against Boston at the Stadium. Clearly, the Red Sox have owned the Yankees this season. So what can be done to reverse the disturbing trend? How can the offense get to former Braves legend John Smoltz, who is nearly 20 years older than Joba and, therefore, has much more experience on the mound? Once again, I reviewed videotape before making my recommendations.
#1) Smoltz said, “The biggest challenge for them is to tame me down.”
There are several ways to tame Smoltz down. One is for the Yankees to hire a cowboy and lasso him.
cowboy.jpeg
Another is for trainers Gene Monahan and Steve Donahue to immobilize Smoltz using one of these.
straight_jacket.jpg
And a third way is simply to summon Yankee Stadium security to do their job.
ys.security.jpg
#2) Smoltz referred to his “blood boiling” and how he can’t get enough of that.
Perhaps the Yankees could test the veracity of that statement by getting a clubhouse attendant (or that merry prankster, A.J. Burnett) to sneak into the visitors dugout and give Smoltz the Carrie treatment?
carrie2.jpg
#3) Smoltz maintained that he’s “a full boar guy.”
Maybe the Yankees should call someone at the Bronx Zoo and get one of their own.
wildboar.jpg
Or did he mean he was a “full bore guy?”
yawning.man.jpg
I’ll let Joe Girardi and his coaches interpret. Bottom line? Joba needs to have a great outing. If he does, the Yanks will be just fine.
Oh. I almost forgot. I have one more ballplayer/celebrity look-alike, this one courtesy of Newsday.

Well, we got the W. That’s all I care about at the moment. As far as Mitre goes, he won’t enter my mind until his next start (if it happens). Right now, all I want is a win against the Sox. I don’t care how it comes; sloppy, neat, smooth, bumpy, dumb luck, pure talent, I don’t care – just as long as it happens! Yeesh. I’ve been waiting for this day since June 11. It couldn’t come fast enough. Joba better keep it up, and the bats better be boiling hot!

I think Girardi’s bullpen usage at this point is all predicated on him trying to save his job. He tried to use more pitchers earlier in the year like Veras and Edwar but they blew up on him. He’s just not going to take any risks in that area this year. I believe the Yanks are in the same position this time as they were the last time they faced the Sox; 2 and half games up in first place. It’s got to go a little better this time? I would love taking 3 games but a split would be most acceptable. They can not and I repeat not get swept again. Enough of that bull crap for one year! I hope bull crap is o.k. for this website!

Good narrative, picture helps a lot and it’s quite fun in reading your article. Sergio Mitre might not make it to the finals but at least he made use of his very best to win the game. Well I just hope that Yankees will do their best to make us proud and even thou it takes me to get no fax payday loans to get tickets and see them play, at least its worth it if they always win the game or just doing their very best to make it. And also the look-a-like picture is really hilarious.

Okay, Jane…3 in a row, 3 HRs off of Halladay? It’s all about the number 3. Take 3 (or 4, why not?) from the Red Sox! Your guys are on a roll. I hope they ride the wave right over Boston. My Angels? Don’t ask. At least the Rangers are having their own troubles with the A’s. Hopefully they’ll still be feeling all dejected and crummy when they get to Anaheim. Big weekend for everyone. Good luck! I mean it too!

Morning Jane. I am more nervous than a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs about this series with the Sox. We have to win at least two to save face. I like this quote from Earl Wilson…” A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.” I plan on having 4 nervous breakdowns this weekend, lol.
Is that cowboy, Smoltz? If not it could be his twin!

LOL, Jane – You got me with Papi and Weezie! Another bit of show biz trivia – Daniel Sujnata starred in the Broadway show “Take Me Out” which was, among other things, a love letter to baseball. He played the superstar leader of the team – but I’ll spare you the details. Our boys are looking pretty good heading into this weekend. Hairston was a nice pick-up, and any opportunity to get a bat in Hinske’s hand is a good thing. Cano and Melky doing good things in the field and at the plate. All the HRs in Toronto not withstanding, there’s a lot of small ball going on – always a good thing. These series with the Sox are always so stressful – I think I’ll be pacing the floor even if we have a gi-normous lead in every game. As for tonight, which should set the tone for the whole series – Smoltz is not the Smoltz of old, and Joba has been so good lately, I’m cautiously optimistic. Go Yanks!

DUH – That’s not Weezie, it’s Florida! Still pretty funny!

Regarding your last lookalike… that’s just WRONG, Jane! LOL! Okay – they could be mother and son. I’ll give you that. I’m still trying to find a good comparison of Steve Buscemi and Clay Buchholz. That is my latest lookalike for the Sox.

Here we go, Jane. Just like the old days! I have no fingernails left thanks to our series with the Rays…

Jen
http://faithful.mlblogs.com

Hi Jane and everyone else here ….

I’m hoping for a BIG series for the Yankees …at least 3 but a SWEEP would be SWEET !!! (ok …I’ll even settle for a split).

I’ll be at the games tonight and tomorrow….I’m wearing my #62 shirt tonight for Joba. This is a very different team than the one that played the RS earlier in the season and I’m hoping for a very exciting series with a happy Yankee outcome.

Big Papi is in for it tonight. I am not one of those who boo or take part in harrassment but I know it’s going to be LOUD when he comes to the plate. The problem I have is wondering just when is Ortiz going to address the public ? Could you imagine if Alex did this? Talk about one sided treatment. Where is all the outrage that Alex had to put up with day after day for weeks on end on every sports network in the country? Why hasn’t Buddy boy (Selig) made negative comments regarding Big Papi the way he did Alex. Sometimes it is tough being a Yankee and the treatment they receive in the press. I’m sure the players will all say that in the end the rewards are much greater tho’ and if they win that Yankee envy will only turn a deeper shade of green … :o).

On a sad note …George Murray who was one of the Hope Week celebrants died of ALS yesterday. I didn’t realize that
he was that close to death at the time he visited the Stadium. I thought he had more time. Thanks to the Yankees …in particular Jason Zillo…Mr. Murray was able to have a wonderful time with his wife, son, family and friends before he was taken by this horrible illness. As he himself said…better than his wildest expectations. Prayers for the family of Mr. Murray.

Go Yankees 2009 !!!

Oh ..and I loved Florida and Big Papi …they really could be mother and son….haha.

Go Yankees 2009 !!

Jane: I have a really good celebrity lookalike for Arod, but I’m not telling you. After this comment, I’ll put it on my blog. I think that guy really looked like Mitre, though. I am so pumped for Boston, I just can’t wait! We owe the Rays quite the thank you, don’t we?🙂 -Virginia
http://southernbelle.mlblogs.com

Well Jane, the Red Sox are all yours. Hope you can figure a way of getting at least one win! Hope that Smoltz doesn’t get too happy with himself – someone’s gonna have to pop that ego for him.
Ginny

Whatever works, right?
-Dillon
http://dillonm.mlblogs.com

I am feeling cautiously optimistic about this series. I think Joba is going to dominate tonight. This is big for the Yankees. At least 3 out of 4 is my prediction. Let’s go Yanks!

Oh man is that Big Dopie celeb comparison dead on! Can’t wait to see how the Bronx welcomes him considering how mean they were to A-Rod. Let the games begin! And, consider beating the Red Sox if y’all wanna stay in first place in the AL East. I’m just sayin’…

Jane: You really don’t see it? Oh well. If you have seen the Star Wars movies with Hayden in them, then I’m sure you will. It’s hard to tell from the picture. He even kind of acts like Arod. I can’t really explain. I think they are twins, but that’s just me. They are both hot, right? Duh! I’m excited for the game tonight. I’m sure most other Yankee fans are, too. -Virginia
http://southernbelle.mlblogs.com

“Just as long as it happens” is right, Lisa. I’m hoping we’ll pitch well, not make errors and NOT leave men on base – the key to success against any team.

I don’t have any problem with Joe wanting to win every game and using his pen to get there, Len. But he was doing it in July – still a long way to go. I don’t know how Hughes will react but I do know that Mo goes into little slumps in August, so I’d use him carefully from now on. And bull crap is what it will be if the Yanks don’t at least get a split!

Glad you enjoyed the post, blained.

I like your number 3 approach, Lori. I’d be happy to take 3 from the Red Sox. But given the way it’s gone so far this season, I honestly have no idea how it’ll go this time. From your comment it sounds like the Angels lost a game? Is that possible? LOL.

That quote sums it up perfectly, adirondackgal! Love it. I’ll be having four nervous breakdowns too. No, the cowboy isn’t Smoltz – just a guy I found on Google.

Interesting that Sunjata was in “Take Me Out” too, ladyjane. I guess he’s destined to be linked with baseball – not a bad fate at all. I agree that the manufactured runs yesterday were as important as the homers. We need to be able to drive them because our history with RISP is not good. Cano and Melky have been tremendous, defensively. (Hope I didn’t just jinx them.) But I’m with you: No lead will be safe until each game is over.

Absolutely they could be mother and son, Jen. Haha!!! You must be exhausted after that series with the Rays. I was exhausted and I only watched the end of the first game. So yes, here we go. Can’t you let us win the series this time?????

Peggy, you’re so lucky you’re going tonight and tomorrow night. I want a full report from each game. And I’ll look for you and your #62 as I scan the stands, but maybe you could hold up a sign saying “It’s Peggy!” I was very saddened to hear about George Murray. Thankfully, the Yankees brought him and his family a joyous day.

Virginia, the Rays certainly did give us a break. Now we need to make our own break by beating the Red Sox and ending the 0-8 skid. As Girardi said, “We have to get rid of the goose egg!”

At least one win, Ginny. That’s how I’m looking at it. One at a time. Of course, if it all adds up to four wins I’ll be an extremely happy Yankee fan.

Whatever works, Dillon. You got it.

I like your prediction, cheshirecat. I felt cautiously optimistic about tonight too – until I got this giant butterfly in my stomach. Then all optimism went out the window.

So you liked Ortiz and Florida, Jeff? I cracked up when I saw it and was just waiting for this series to use it. And yes, I’m aware of first place being at stake, but thanks.🙂

I tried to see the likeness, Virginia, but what do I know!

Jane,
That look-a-like was uncanny.
Maybe Ortiz was taking a different kind of medication, or the injection of testosterone might have been to mask the “Wheezie” in him.
The next 4 games is going to be like a AL East battle from pergatory for both your teams.
But that is what happens in the merry month of August, we get teams positioning for that final push towards the big money.
Should be fun with that short porch in RF, and the fact that the Red Sox are still trying to figure out how they lost both those games to us.
We did our job, now it is your turn to break that streak and get some red meat for dinner.

Rays Renegade

http://raysrenegade.mlblogs.com

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! OMG the Florida-Ortiz comparision is OUTSTANDING!!!!! And he shouldn’t feel out of place being cast by a woman. Tex got the same treatment! I can’t stop looking at it! Uncanny doesn’t even come close!!
I have good vibes for this series…I really do. Joba’s been a different pitcher since getting some Nebraska lovin’ during the All Star break. And Smoltz looks more and more like a disgruntled dentist with every outing. I agree that it was nice that Mo didn’t have to work last night…as for Hughes? Well, knowing me, you know I get a little “riled up” when he’s on the mound and every chance I see him I can’t help to think how I’d be the perfect housewife for him. I know, I know…I’m selfish, but you’re right. He could have used the night off yesterday. Most likely unavailable tonight now; Girardi should have rested him. Let’s hope the bullpen can hold out tonight. Good vibes though!!! Let’s get the Sox.
Megan http://yankeemeg.mlblogs.com/

All right — this is it. No more messin’ around. I’ve had to grind my teeth down to nubs all season and say, well, they Just Can’t Beat the Angels or the ‘Roid Sox (luv that name). So now — put up or shut up. Yes, there will be some likely smackback in Fenway later in the month, but This IS Our House. Victor Martinez scares the wee-wee out of me, but there’s so many, why bother to name ’em all. JUST DO IT.
Now, on the Lighter Side…I’ve wondered for YEARS, who does Big Sloppy look like & remind me of? As soon as I saw it…Bingo…you NAILED it!!

Your guys did do their job, Renegade. Now it’s up to the Yankees to do theirs. And red meat for dinner sounds awfully tasty. Any tips for beating the Sox? The Rays seem to have none of the problems my team has. Come on, spill.

I wish Joba had taken a quick trip back to Nebraska before his start tonight, Megan. He might need some extra lovin’ for this outing unless Smoltz continues to look like a “disgruntled dentist” (LOL). And I know how much you hunger for Hughes, but he needs to rest up. At least Mo will be available if needed. I’ll try to go about my day radiating good vibes, I really will.

It’s the space between the two front teeth that nails the Ortiz/Rolle comparison, Dave. That’s my theory anyway. Victor Martinez scares me too, but then everybody scares me. It’s a good thing I’m not the one playing because I couldn’t take the pressure!

Geez, nice interpretation on John Smoltz!! Hopefully, the Yankees will be winless against the Red Sox this weekend!! Still can’t believe Paula is leaving Idol. Going to be one wierd season, she was so good at encouraging the contestants.
-Holly
http://irishsoxkid19.mlblogs.com

Hopefully, the Yankees will win this series, Holly! As for Paula, I don’t watch American Idol (shocking, I know).

I don’t watch AI either! Thought I was the only one. 🙂

For Yankee fans, you might want to check out the first paragraph of my “Rough Stretch” entry earlier this week.

http://behindblueyes.mlblogs.com

Jane,
OMG the Ortiz look a like! How did you ever find that one? Were you watching an old episode? Don’t you love copy/paste for names you can’t spell? So does Rzepcyzynski have a nickname or nicknames?
Emma
Rzepcyzynski oops! I meant http://crzblue.mlblogs.com

I’m so not a fan of reality shows, behindblueyes, so I guess there are two of us! I’ll definitely check out the post you mentioned. Thanks.

Haha, Emma. Yes, that Toronto pitcher does have a nickname. They call him Zippy, and I wish I’d known before I took the time to spell his real name correctly! The Ortiz look-alike was featured in Newsday a while back and I saw it there.

Okay Jane, your look alike stuff is hysterical. that David Ortiz and Florida are just too much. That awful bloody picture from Carrie got to me. It reminds me of work!!
http://catlovesthedodgers.mlblogs.com

Ooh, sorry about the Carrie pic, Cat. I didn’t think about your job! Just remember it was only a movie with fake blood – probably ketchup!

The Ortiz one is by far the best one yet, that cracked me up, very nice. If Joba continues to display this renewed sense of greatness he acquired over the all star break, the Yankees can definitely come away with a win. What I think I’m looking forward to the most is seeing how the bullpens will match up, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
-R
http://yankeeslovin.mlblogs.com/

You’re right about the battle of the bullpens, R. A month or two ago, I would have given the Red Sox’s pen the edge, but I’m not so sure anymore. Ours has looked really good lately. I guess we’ll know soon enough if Joba has it together tonight. Game starts soon!

JANE!
I just heard from Losmayores.com that
“El panameño Mariano Rivera ha sido nombrado Relevista del Mes de julio”

Woohoo! congratulations!
Emma
http://crzblue.mlblogs.com/

Emma, can you translate? I know you’re talking about Mo, but that’s about it!!!!

Hey, Jane …

Congratulations on being ranked #1 [again] on the July Leader’s List !!! … It’s a great time to be a Yankees fan with the Yanks #1 in the AL East, and your blog #1 on the mlblogs “fan” leader’s list !!! … Both “number one’s” are well deserved !!!
.
Enjoy the game, tonight, Jane !!!
“Playoff Baseball In August” — it doesn’t get much better then this !!!
.
“Go Yankees” !!!
— Jimmy 27NYY Curran, “BY&L”
http://baseballtheyankeesandlife.mlblogs.com/

Thanks, Jimmy. Let’s hope our Yanks STAY number one. Right now we’re tied 1-1 with the Red Sox coming to bat in the fourth. Neither starter will last long….

I know you have to be loving this bottom 4th 9-3 up on the sox… just hope you guys can hold on…
~peter

Big Papi – funny! And I think what Emma said is Mo has been named reliever of the month for July. Sound right?

Jenn
http://philliesphollowers.mlblogs.com/

Jen and Jane,
Yes Jen, you got it right! I got the news in Spanish and I just copy/pasted while working. Sorry should have translated.
,
I just got home from the game! Woohoo!! Walkoff by Andre Ethier! his 5th walk-off! The guy is amazing.
Emma
http://crzblue.mlblogs.com/

Peter, I was loving it. It was a wild game, but I really liked the end result!

Jenn, thanks for translating. Very excited for Mo whenever he’s recognized for the great reliever he is.

I appreciate your telling me about Mo, Emma, in any language. LOL! Congrats on your game tonight. Walk-offs are the best.
