How Many Penas Does It Take To Screw Up A Ball Game?

Answer?

Four.
This Pena (Brayan) doubled off Phil Coke in the eighth inning, evening the score at 4-4 and wasting Joba’s fine performance.

This Pena (Tony Junior) was the one who scampered home with the tying run.

This Pena (Ramiro) should have been in the lineup instead of Ransom, who is now 0-for-900, or so it feels.

And this Pena (Tony Senior) should have compelled Girardi to use Edwar or Albaladejo in the eighth – anybody but Veras, who invariably walks batters in close games. This Pena should also have leaned on the skipper to pull Coke, once it was clear he had nothing. Isn’t that what bench coaches are for? As a result, the Yankees went down to the Royals 6-4.

Other grievances…
Yes, it was raining and the conditions weren’t optimal, but did Callaspo’s grounder really have to dribble through Swisher’s legs…before it dribbled through Cano’s legs too? The play was reminiscent of last year’s Cano-Betemit routine where a ball rolled between them for a hit. It also reminded me of this.
Other moments of hilarity? Whenever Kansas City’s official scorer ruled that an obvious error was, instead, a base hit.

A moment of non-hilarity? When I found out that Tex was out of the lineup again because of his left wrist tendinitis. I really can’t stand the words: “We’re shutting him down.” They give me visions of this.

Does anyone remember when I said I wanted to kidnap the Orioles’ Nick Markakis, because he was so tough against the Yankees? Well, now I’ve decided to kidnap Joakim Soria, the Royals’ closer, who struck out the side in the ninth and looked very, very nasty.

If anyone sees this man, please let me know and I’ll alert my people.

Ha!! i love the take on the gang of four! ( peña’s that is)

in all seriousness though, i wonder how much advice girardi is willing to take from crafty old Tony. i’d like to think a lot, but i’m quite doubtful. today infuriated me. there is nothing worse than wasting a great pitching performance. especially galling since this was Joba’s first this year. but cosidering the half assed team girardi threw out there, i guess i shouldn’t be too surprised.

Line Up
– damon + melky = bad
Line up
– damon, subtract one jorge add a melky and a jose+ one pitiful ransom = disaster.

I’m getting concerned about your desire to kidnap players!!I hope the FBI isn’t monitoring this blog!
LOVE the Abbott and Costello video!!! This may post twice.

Mike, I, too, was surprised to see Damon out of the lineup. I know they all need a day off, but why not rest Matsui, whose bat has been dead lately?

I hope the FBI isn’t monitoring it too, Ken. Or if they are, I hope they have a sense of humor! Maybe they’ll be distracted by Abbott and Costello.

Yes, please kidnap Joakim Soria. That would be great.-Erinhttp://plunking-gomez.mlblogs.com

I praise Swisher one day, and he lets the dribbler go through his legs the next. Joba deserved to win that game, but of course, we poured gasoline on the fire with the choice of relievers as you’ve suggested. At least Bruney and Marte did their jobs. Soria is definitely underrated, and has nasty stuff. I’ve always enjoyed the Abbott & Costello routine. Thanks for the memory. I just wish that it wasn’t a description of how the Yanks played! LOL!

Is it 10 AM yet? I cannnnt sleeeeep! I am too excited
Emma

Jane – maybe it’s Scott’s fault for praising Swisher! lol! It seems like neither of our teams are capable of getting going this season. And I’m with you the phrase “shutting him down” is not a comforting one.

I think MLB needs to impose a “Three Pena maximum” rule going forward.

Is that guy in the full bodycast Carl Pavano?
Some advice for Phil Coke when the team gets back to NY: Either bunk with a teammate or rent a a hotel room by the day. A long term commitment is a bad investment (unless it’s in Scranton).

I’d be happy to kidnap Soria for you, Erin. He could be the 8th inning setup guy the Yankees need as a bridge to Mo – and out of your division.

We really need Tex back, Scott. He’s a defensive genius at first and the other infielders are better for it. It wouldn’t hurt to have A-Rod back too. But meanwhile, we wait….and hope.

Try to breathe, Emma. Ahhhhh. There. OK, now you can be excited again!

Whenever a player is being “shut down,” we never know whether that means for a day, for a week, for 15 days, forever? Very worrisome, Julia.

You’re right, Steve. Three is enough. Four is overkill.

It’s a shame, Paul, because Coke was doing so well. But we’re getting a longer look at him now and the cracks are showing.

Maybe ya’ll should switch to Pepsi. I’m just sayin…

Pepsi is the Yankees’ sponsor, Jeff! We’re on that. What we need is an eighth inning set up guy. He could be named Dr. Pepper for all I care!

Hmm, Jane, where will you be keeping all these kidnapees? I suppose you could put them to use as slaves to do your housework. On second thought, send them to me! I could use a little help around the house too.

Haha, that’s so funny! There were a lot of Penas there. Love the video, that’s a classic🙂
http://kaybee.mlblogs.com

Ahh, I didn’t even realize the # of Penas, lol..nice catch..
About Tex, I swear, that phrase always makes me think of a robot or super computer that they’re shutting down [Eagle Eye style] lol.. Hopefully, Tex doesn’t have to sit for too long.. A lineup w/o him and Alex is… well, what is was yesterday.. less than super.
p.s. I bet after today’s game you’ll be saying you want to kidnap Evan Longoria.. and if you do, I’ll help😉
– V [ http://flairforthedramatic.mlblogs.com ]

I won’t be keeping the kidnapees at home, Sue. I’ll be smuggling them into the Yankees clubhouse and sending them out to play for us. Maybe no one will notice that they’re not on our roster.🙂

I love the video too, Kaybee. Hadn’t seen it in a long time.

I’m reserving judgment on kidnapping Longoria, V. He’s been hot, but it’s usually Pena who kills us. Anyhow, whoever hurts us tonight and during this series will be on my Watch List.

Jane – I just don’t know how you do it all… Writing books, blogs, travelling all over following players, kidnapping players, and still watching the game! You’re SuperWoman! Talk about multi tasking! LOL!
Canuck

P.S. Watch out for another Pena tonight!

The kidnapping is quite a drain on my time, Canuck.🙂 But it’ll be worth it if I can prevent Yankee killers from spoiling my season! And yes, there will be yet another Pena to watch out for. Enjoy your opener at the Trop even though I’ll be rooting against your Scotty, of course.

This was one of your best blogs! I am still laughing as I am writing this. Very clever! Love the Aabott and Costello skit.

http://baseballintheattic.mlblogs.com/

I want to kidnap James Sheilds! He was in the zone!
Also Bob and I are doing a blog together! (It’s open to anyone between 6th grade and 12th)

Tony used to manage the Royals…Tony Jr. wanted to show his dad how well the Royals have improved since he went over to the dark side. Tony Jr. knew the force was still with him. :>)

Jane,
Too many Penas! Just like that bunch of Molinas. I’m sure you’re not very happy about Tex– I’m sure you want him rested and ready to go right? And it feels like Jed Lowrie is 0-900 too.
Elizabeth

Jane,
I enjoy reading your blog. Most of the time you get it right. This time, though, I think you swung and missed. Joba pitched two different games Sunday: innings 1 and 2 he cruised through; 3, 4 and 5 he was inconsistent, hit hard and a bit wild; but in the 6th he got back on track. He kept us in the game and deserved a win, but it is a concern that the second time through the line-up they lit him up and he lost confidence. Don’t get me wrong; I love Joba. I would just rather see him blow them away in the 7th and 8th and prepare to replace Mariano (God forbid!) when the time comes.

Haha. Maybe it was a Pena conspiracy. Soria is a filthy, you’re lucky he’s not in your division. Then again, how many leads are the Royals really going to have going into the ninth? (I should have saved that comment for after this Indians-Royals series).

Jason

The curse of the Pena continues tonight…4-0 Rays!🙂
Looks like they are resting Tex, why would they risk him getting hurt further?
Canuck

Always glad to make you laugh, baseballintheattic!

Sounds like my kidnapping idea is catching on, Jordan! Good luck on your blog with Bob.

It must be fun for Tony Sr. to watch his son do well, Aaron, even as he wants the Yankees to win.

I do want Tex rested and healthy, Elizabeth. He had an MRI today and there’s inflammation but no structural damage. So they just need to give him a higher dose of anti-inflammatories.

Gehrigcodychaise, I don’t disagree with you that Joba is an outstanding 8th inning guy. He’d certainly be my choice. But the Yankees want him to start and he wants to start, so it seems like a foregone conclusion – for now, anyway.

Soria’s filthy all right, Jason. I’m glad he’s in your division!

Canuck, your guys are killing us. Make them stop!!!!!

I’m sorry what were those plans for kidnapping Pena again? Did you see that little home run…?🙂 Bye Bye Wang!
Canuck

Yeah, but we just got a run. Woohoo! (Wait till you see who the kidnap victim will be….)

Jane – Don’t you dare…

Don’t worry. He’s safe. I would never steal him from you. But there are others….

I read that title wrong and it made me think of something else, if you know what I mean. :p
http://metsmainman.mlblogs.com

Others? First Carlos, then Evan….Are you collecting the All Star team?🙂

I know what you mean, Metsmainman….Your game tonight looks like a nail biter, btw.

Yep, I’m taking the whole team, Canuck.

I think the solution for you, girlfriend, is to watch your second favorite team, the Dodgers. O Dog hit for the cycle today and Andre Ethier hit 2 homeruns. Everyone got a hit including the pitcher. No frustration here. Cross that line, Jane.
http://catlovesthedodgers.mlblogs.com

Looks like Soria would look good in a Pittsburgh uniform. Or as a ‘spy’ for the Navy off the coast of Somalia.
http://homerfoodandhistory.mlblogs.com/

Wow. Sounds like a great game for the Dodgers, Russ. You must be in a better mood. I can’t cross the line, but I can peek over it and listen to Vin Scully. What a treasure he is.

I’m fine with shipping Soria off to the Navy, Jeremy. We wouldn’t have to face him if he’s in Somalia.:)
