The Yankees Won The Season That Didn’t Count!

grapefruit.jpg

Yes, they won the 2009 Grapefruit League. Which is another way of saying they won the state of Florida.
FloridaMap.jpg
Which is another way of saying they won more spring training games than any other team on the circuit. I realize it’s not the World Series, but it’s better than this.
Stooges- Eye Poke.jpg
Presumably, the players are feeling good about themselves as they head home to face the Cubs for two more games that don’t count. Will they win those too? Who cares. I just want the “real” season to start.
Which team will take home the hardware this year? Everybody’s got a prediction, and the answers vary depending on whom you ask. Of course, I pick the Yankees. I’m a complete homer. I can’t be trusted to think impartially. I don’t pretend to be fair. But I honestly believe the Yanks have the talent to get it done. I mean, seriously. Look at this starting rotation.

Is it better than Beckett/Lester/Matsuzaka/Wakefield/Penny/Smoltz?
Or Kazmir/Shields/Garza/Sonnanstine/Price?
Only time will tell, but it’s a helluva lot better than last year’s model.
Are there question marks? Sure. But every team has them. Every team.
What isn’t a question mark for the Yankees this year is a first baseman who can not only hit with consistency and power but who can catch the ball. Huge upgrade right there.
texjpg.jpg
Other non-question marks? I like Jeter leading off, with Damon batting second. I think Gardy will drive opposing pitchers nuts on the bases. I figure Nady will have a productive contract year. I’m glad we have a bench, which was nonexistent in ’08. I expect Mo to be Mo.
But don’t take my word for it. Hear what Michael, my husband, had to say. I turned the She-Fan Cam on him earlier while we were walking on the beach. He was a reluctant interviewee, threatening to throw the Cam into the ocean if I didn’t leave him alone, but I talked him down.
It’s settled. The only other times in life that Michael was ever wrong were:
2001 – He predicted the Yankees would beat the Diamondbacks.
2003 – He predicted the Yankees would bury the Marlins.
2004 – He predicted the Yankees would sweep the Red Sox.
2007-  He predicted the Yankees would overcome the Indians and their indigenous insects.

O.K., so his track record isn’t perfect. Never mind. The Yankees will win the World Series. Again.

All I can say Jane is “Bring it on!” I can not wait for the season to start and who knows? Maybe by the time he leaves Boston this weekend Scott will be a Red Sox fan also! (Okay – that probably won’t happen – but I’ll try!)

Hmm, I don’t know, Jane… based on your husband’s record there, it sounds like you’d be better off betting on the opposite of what he says.🙂
But I’m a total homer too. I say lets root for a Phillies/Yankees matchup, that way we can both be happy.

I may be as biased as you are Jane, but I think we are going to win it all too. I think we have a genuine great team to be excited about. No Carl Pavanos on this squad! I also think every game at Yankee Stadium is going to have extra intensity as the fans soak up the new stadium (and try and get their moneys worth). Fueled by beer they can buy legally the Bleacher Creatures will cheer with renewed vigour. This is going to be a special season and I can’t wait until the games count. Go Yanks!

I am completely incapable of looking at the Central Division objectively, so I understand. The Yankees do look good this year but I still don’t think they can beat the Red Sox in the AL East but I guess we will see.
I am glad Michael got to come home for dinner; it would be sad if he had to stay out on the beach and scrounge for food.

So let me if I got this right, not only are 4 out of the 5 Yankee starters ugly, but one is an admitted steroid user and the other is a proven drunk driver. And 4 out of 5 have spent time on the DL.

Oh well, maybe that’s better than the O’s rotation of “? and the Mysterians”

Hey Jane – I will be watching the games on MLB TV so that will take care of my baseball fix. There was one channel that showed the ESPN Sunday night game and occasionally the Wednesday night game, but they spent all of their budget on a daytime soap opera and had to cancel the sport. Idiots.I agree the Yanks’ rotation in an improvement from ’08 and I also love Teix at 1B. But I really don’t even think they’ll make the playoffs. I think the Red Sox and Rays will both go into the postseason and that the Yanks will finish third again. Don’t worry though, as hopeful as I am that the Mets will win it all, we could also finish in the middle of pack if we don’t show up to play.Ashhttp://ashley.marshall.mlblogs.com

That is the great thing about baseball and being a fan. You don’t have to be objective if you don’t want to be. If you ask me, the Reds will make a Rays-like run and win the World Series!Russhttp://wight4256.mlblogs.com

Who knows is right, Julia.

I’m all for a Yankees/Phillies matchup, Sue. That way the players can avoid those long plane rides AND we’ll both be happy.

No, Michael didn’t have to battle the seagulls for scraps of bread crumbs, Melissa. He had a big bowl of pasta.

I’m not even going to ask which of the 5 starters you don’t think is ugly, Ken. All I know is your pitchers are, indeed, the Mysterians.

I think the Mets will be right in it until the end, Ash. But I heartily disagree on your Yankees prediction. This is not a third place team we’ve got this year. Nope.

No objectivity whatsoever, Russ. I don’t see why the Reds can’t have a Cinderella run. Stranger things have happened.

Jane,
He is 42, that means the Dodgers were already in LA and the Giants in SF. You know Dodgers were mentioned in the last 3 She-Fan Cams I watched!
.
I am so excited that my boys are back in town!
Emma

He’s not 42, Emma. He wishes he were 42! Trust me, when he was a little kid the Dodgers and Giants were NY teams. I like writing about the Dodgers, btw. I may be up here in Santa Barbara, but I listen to their games.

Oops, I don’t know how I let your comment slip by, Cheshirecat – especially since you’re the only one on my side here! I agree with everything you wrote. This is the team. This is the year. This is the stadium. We will prevail!

Jane – I think you guys have a great rotation. I hope that AJ can do better in NY than he did in Toronto. Joba will overcome the DUI thing, it seems to be a small bump in the road compared to the other stuff the Yanks have been dealing with. Every team has their problems. Good Luck this year………..you’re gonna need it! :0)
Canuck
http://watercooler.mlblogs.com

lol Jane! Ok, I am glad he agreed to do the she-fan cam.
Thank you & Canuck for the instructions on how to imbed a youtube. I know I will hear Nancy Bea playing “The boys are back in town” at the stadium.
.
Emma
http://crzblue.mlblogs.com/

That’s the truth, Canuck. There isn’t a “perfect” team out there – at least not yet. We’re all gonna need luck.

You’re welcome, Emma. Embedding videos is easy once you get the hang of it.

I think your husband just jinxed the Yankees. I mean, look at his track record.-Erinhttp://plunking-gomez.mlblogs.com

No he didn’t, Erin. He was just giving his “expert analysis!” LOL.

The O’s just signed a well-known free agent pitcher to their rotation!!! Check out my blog for the scoop!

Ken

http://brooksrobinsonrules.mlblogs.com

Eh, it’s nearly impossible to pick the WS winner this early anyways so you might as well guess the Yankees. Even if you guess right it’s just pure luck.

http://www.bronxbaseballdaily.com

I’ll be right over, Ken. You have piqued my curiosity.

I didn’t pick the Yankees last year, Rob, as much as I wanted them to win. I just didn’t have the faith in their rotation, plus we had Giambi at first and other “issues.”

It’s finally here. Almost. The REAL season!
Thanx for getting Michael in front of the camera at last. Nice to see the Famous Architect/Photographer/Hot Dog Con-O-Sewer…and thanx too for remembering Blanchard…
Hey, here’s a trend: every time the Yankees build a new Yankee Stadium, they win it all! It happened in 1923, didn’t it? Now, if we can just conjure up The Babe to hit the first one outa there again…!! And speaking of ’23, are all those 10-cent tickets sold for the Cubs games (I assume they were sold out many months ago…)?

Michael is so shy, so it was like pulling teeth, Dave. But he did give a shout out to Blanchard. As for the Cubs games, I heard there was rain in the forecast?

I think your rotation is big for you guys to win. You guys need AJ and CC to stay healthy.

~ King of Cali
http://kingofcali.mlblogs.com/

You got that right, King. It’s all about the health.

You did quite well to shoot the video and hold the gun on him simultaneously without it coming into view.
Just kidding.
Michael is a piece…of…work. And I mean that in a good way. Yee-ha.
The Three Stooges photo reminded me of the movie they’re making and the unprecedented star power they’ve apparently got lined up. I mean, Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro? Unlike most guys, I HATE The Three Stooges. Never thought they were funny at all. I guess it’s like Superman and Batman guys; or Munsters and Addams Family guys. There are Three Stooges guys and Abbott and Costello guys. I’m a Batman/Munsters/Abbott and Costello guy, whatever that means.
http://www.paullebowitz.com/

Jane,
So the Yankees won the state of FL… does that mean they legally own any part of me? I don’t really want that to be honest🙂. “I don’t pretend to be fair” lol! I’m a complete homer too, don’t worry. Great interview of Michael! I enjoyed it!
Elizabeth
http://redsoxgirl46.mlblogs.com

Ha ha, Paul. I think the casting of Sean Penn as Larry is inspired. If the movie comes together I’ll be in line for it. I’m a Three Stooges person and I’m also an Abbott and Costello person. But mostly I’m an I Love Lucy person, in case you couldn’t tell.

Yes, the Yankees own you, Elizabeth, and the grapefruits in your backyard!

Excellent job as always Jane, and I would expect nothing less. I agree that the rotation gives us as good a shot as any team in the league to make a run at the title.

Do not underestimate “winning Florida” as you put it. After 2003 and Tampa’s run last season…i am proud to win anything associated with Florida baseball. Keep up the great work.

http://heartbeatofthebronx.blogspot.com/

Lol, the Yanks are that great this year. They’re going to win the ones that count and don’t. We’re taking it this year!! [I hope] Lol.
Nice to “meet” your infamous she-fan husband =)
– V [ http://flairforthedramatic.mlblogs.com ]

I think doing well in spring training is better than not doing well, Stephen. Is it an indicator of anything? Who knows. But we have a good team. I’m very hopeful!

Yes, we’re taking it this year, V. Michael, the infamous one, predicted it. (Gulp)
