Saturday’s Yankees Headline: CC Hurls

I’m not talking about pitching. Apparently, Sabathia was taken down by a case of stomach flu and couldn’t complete his workout.
swish.jpg(Here’s an AP photo of Nick Swisher doing his best imitation of CC driving the porcelain bus.)
I sincerely hope the bug isn’t contagious, because the very last thing the Yankees need right now is a clubhouse full of upchuckers.
On to a more pleasant subject: the Academy Awards.

I’m excited about tomorrow night’s show (I’ll be live blogging), even though it’ll probably last for hours and people will make boring speeches and Hugh Jackman isn’t my idea of an A-list host – plus I’m still miffed that Clint Eastwood/Gran Torino and Bruce Springsteen/The Wrestler weren’t nominated. On Oscars eve, here are my predictions.
The nominees are:
Best Actor
Brad Pitt (Benjamin Button)
Richard Jenkins (The Visitor)
Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon)
Sean Penn (Milk)
Who should win: Sean Penn
Who will win: Mickey Rourke
(Sean has already been nominated five times and won once, so I pick Mickey to take the prize. Hollywood loves a comeback story, and he’s sure to say something odd and endearing up at the podium.)
Best Actress
Meryl Streep (Doubt)
Melissa Leo (Frozen River)
Kate Winslet (The Reader)
Angelina Jolie (Changeling)
Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married)
Who should win: Melissa Leo
Who will win: Kate Winslet
(Kate is the new Meryl and it’s her year. As amazing as Melissa Leo was, nobody saw Frozen River; she’s lucky to have been nominated.)
Best Picture
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
Milk
Frost/Nixon
Benjamin Button
Who should win: Slumdog Millionaire
Who will win: Slumdog Millionaire
(I started to get Slumdog Fatigue a few weeks ago when the movie won all the run-up awards, but I still think it’ll bring home the gold.)
The only remaining question is….Which of these should I wear?

I really like the gown in the bottom row, second from the right, but who am I kidding. I’ll end up wearing this.

Mickey Rouke’s 18 year old dog passed away this week. I would think he would make a nice mention or 5 of his departed pet and gain more crowd sympathy win or lose because of the events and his fondness for his dogs.

My category of the night is Best Supporting Actor, which should be Heath Ledger. If you have ever seen his portrayal of the Joker in ” The Dark Knight” I do not have to say more. If not, let me tell you Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero could not be this menacing and evil as that character. It was of those “performances of a lifetime”, like Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump.

It should be interesting to see if Hugh Jackman goes back to his musical theatre roots during the broadcast. I am told he was an amazing stage actor before Hollywood called him.

I’m sure Mickey will mention his dog if he wins, Renegade. And I agree with you about Heath Ledger. As far as I’m concerned, he was the main reason to see Dark Knight, which I found interminably long and drawn out at the end. He’s a shoo-in for Supporting Actor and will get a very vocal standing O. I think the producers chose Hugh Jackson because they were looking for less political humor and more singing and dancing. I’m not big on musical numbers, but I’ll keep an open mind!

“So Jane, who are you wearing?”

“I’m wearing Target from the Bathroom Collection.”

Love the post title, Jane! I always pause when I work “hurl” into a story or panel headline before going with it, lol.

I like the gown first row, second from the right. Is my favorite color. Dodger Blue!

Rourke actually did a great job though. I haven’t seen Milk, but I will just assume Penn did great as well, since he usually does.

I agree, how did Pitt get a nomination over Clint? Rouke would give by far the best speech of the night, I think the audience would rather see him win over Penn. Sadly Frozen River’s release was pretty weak (pretty much only art theaters) so Melissa Leo will end up getting shafted, though I love when the big the categories go to the underdog. Oh, and I understand your feelings about Burn After Reading, I went with three friends and they didn’t like it as much as I did (general consensus: “I can’t tell if that was worth the $11 I just spent.”) I think the most important thing is that something interesting and exciting happens during the three hours I’ll be glued to the TV since it’s usually much too long (like the last act of The Dark Knight). :-\

I too will be watching the awards, which is unusual for me since I always forget when these things are on. But I’m watching for Kate Winslet and Heath Ledger…mainly Heath. I’ll probably be watching it in cheerleading shorts and a tank top since I’ll be cleaning and doing homework all day!

The gown on the bottom right looks like a merengue (sp?) pie…or maybe I am just hungry?
Hey, halfway through your book…read it on the plane. Can’t wait to find out what happens!!

I guess I’ll be one of the few people in the country who won’t be watching! Award shows aren’t my thing. It will be interesting to read tomorrow about whether Hollywood toned down the bling on the runway given the current economy.

Have fun!

I love Slumdog Millionaire! I hope it wins! I am sorry CC is sick, I hope he gets better; throwing up is my least favorite thing.
I like the pink dress at the top. It is really pretty. :)

The stomach flu is going around my school so C.C. isn’t the only one. I never saw Slumdog Millionaire. Should I?

Bob- http://bostonsports.mlblogs.com/

According to Pete, CC is going to throw BP today, so he’s probably feeling better.
I sadly won’t be able to watch the Awards [I have no cable until Tuesday, urg] but considering as how I never watch them because they’re insanely boring, I think I’ll live.. but I want to know who won Best Supporting Actor the minute they announce it Jane! Lol. If they rob Heath, the world is doomed.
- V [ http://flairforthedramatic.mlblogs.com ]

They ought to bring in the Muppets to host one of these shows. I would watch then.
Rosh : http://roshkoch.mlblogs.com

Actually, Levelboss, I’ll probably be wearing jeans and my Mariano Rivera T-shirt from the Yankees.com Collection.

I debated using that headline, Dan, but then I figured what the heck. It was accurate.

That gown is gorgeous, Emma. And very Dodger blue. It’s got your name on it.

Sean Penn was outstanding, Joe. He disappeared into the part – the complete opposite of his character in “Mystic River.” Very deserving, but it’s Mickey’s year.

Brian, you are so right about Brad Pitt getting a nom over Clint. No justice there at all. I guess the Academy had to throw noms at “Benjamin Button” because it was really the only big-budget studio picture, aside from “Dark Knight.”

Jen, Heath can’t lose. Just can’t. Not only was he tremendous as the Joker but I’m sure they’ll honor him as a way of saying goodbye. (Have the Kleenex ready.)

The gown looks like a meringue pie. LOL, Jenn. Glad you’re enjoying the book so far.

I hope Hollywood won’t be toning down the bling, Julia. The Oscars are an escape. I want to see glamor and glitz, not a somber show. Somber is what I get on the news every night.

I’m not wild about throwing up either, Melissa. :) And I can’t imagine Slumdog not winning, but sometimes they surprise us.

Yeah, Bob. You should see Slumdog. It’s amazing. So colorful and dazzling. The kids in it suffer the most horrible poverty and yet rise above it. Very inspiring.

I see that CC had a good throwing session, V, so I guess it was a 24-hour bug. Whew. Sorry about your cable situation, and you’re right about the show being boring; it tends to go downhill about an hour in. But Heath will be victorious!

The Muppets? I’d have to pass on that show, Rosh.

WHAT!?!?! No love for Kermit and the gang? Not even love for Statler and Waldorf heckling from their own private balcony?

O.K. They’re cute, especially Miss Piggy.

She-Fan,

I was disappointed when “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” failed to score any nominations, and I vowed not to attend this year’s Oscars, either as a past winner or presenter. I might watch, but I’ve had enough of these Hollywood dog-thankers and their ways. Glad to know you’ll be live-blogging.

el duque

My sister said that Slumdog is the best. Unfortunately, I did not see it.

What do you think: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090222&content_id=3863194&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

BTW CC tweeted just now that he worked on his cutter today. Amazing that he communicates via Twitter now.

Amazing that I had same reaction to bottom row second from right…and then read your comment about it.

You will so be watching, duque. You’re not fooling me.

Aaron, Slumdog is really good. You should definitely see if if you can.

Mark, that article was great! So clever! Regarding Twitter, if CC’s tweets I guess I’d better tweet. Glad we have the same taste is evening gowns. LOL!

lol Jane,
You would be the head of all the tabloids if you wore that. I was talking to my dad about your boo and how you would be in Tampa and he pretty much agreed to let me come up and see you :). I hope it works out!!!
Thanks for all the support with my paper!

I’ve admired Melissa Leo’s work since ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’. It’s a shame that the academy doesn’t feel the same.

I’m watching the Oscars, but decided to drop by and say hello to everyone!

Jane, I finished the book last night.. I absolutely LOVED IT! I’m sad I finished it.. very entertaining, funny…AWESOME!

I’m going to start reading Joe’s book sometime this week.

So you’re only going to Tampa for a book signing? :-( Well, if you come up North East near DC I would be so happy! :-)

Anyway, I can’t wait until the games begin.

Oh, does anyone know if they are going to show the WBC games in regular cable or do I have to pay for the MLB package?

peace, love, & baseball,

Lille Marie
(I’m officially latin yankee rebel now)

Elizabeth, did your father really say he’d drive you all the way to Tampa? That’s so far. I’ll totally understand if you can’t be there. Honest. It’s just cool that you want to come. (Actually, if you do come, you can come to the Yankees game that night and boo them!)

Erin, she’s amazing in Frozen River and I think it was great that she was nominated. The movie was made for an incredibly low budget and wasn’t shown in many theaters, so I’m glad she’s being recognized.

So excited that you enjoyed the book, Lilllie Marie (Latin Yankee Rebel – got it). I wish I were coming to the DC area to promote it, but it’s just FL for now. I’m looking forward to my book party here in Santa Barbara on Saturday and hope we get a nice crowd. Regarding the WBC, I think the MLB Network is showing the games. Am I wrong?

What have the Yankees done to my Swisher????? That just aint right! Oh well maybe he will be back in 7 years :o)

He could be back if the Yankees decide to use Nady in right field instead. But I think he’ll be around for awhile. Sorry!
