Who will survive the competition? And who will get voted off the field? Only time will tell, but here’s what’s for sure:
* Last year is irrelevant.

* Every season is full of surprises.

* Anybody can win. Again.

It is the day we have waited all winter for Jane! I took a biblical approach to our special day on my blog – but finally: Play Ball!

Insert music from the “Hallelujah Chorus” here!
Ahhh…there’s a picture of one of my favorite catchers, Jose Molina. I love watching any of the Molina brothers behind the plate: Yadi for the Cardinals, Bengie for the Giants and Jose for the Yanks. I cheered hard when Jose got the last home run at Yankees Stadium. He was an unlikely choice for the role, but I loved seeing a guy who has given his life to the game get that moment in the sun.

She-Fan,

Don’t mean to digress here, but on a related subject, you blew it. I mean, blew it!

There’s a movie out right now called, “Confessions of a Shopaholic.” Your book should have been titled, “Confessions of a Yankaholic.” Don’t you have a person on staff who researches these kinds of things? We’re talking vertical marketing, or horizontal marketing — hell, let’s not get hung up on marketing lingo — but this is a blunder. Heads should roll.

My pitchers and catchers all come today!!!!!!!! I am so excited!!!!!

I have loved the media’s blunders and wonders as to who will be the 2009 Rays.

Does it even matter yet. Can we at least get to May before the hype hits the fan and we have to justify or even mystify the world with a response. I am predicting a rough A L East race from Day 1 for 4 teams in our division.

If you win 12 plus games against your division foes, you will be in the playoffs. That would be 60 wins right there. From Boston and New York pitching, to the Toronto offensive surprise, it is going to be a fun year. I also think that Baltimore will be over .500 this season and shock a few people a long the way.

As for the Rays. 94 wins was a exceptional season. To even be considered for the playoffs, that will have to be repeated. I am not going to get on a soapbox and chant my answer, but if a few teams pitching holds up to their expectations, it will be a battle for even a wild card.

So with 2 days left, let’s just relax and wax poetic about the upcoming season and the chills and thrills that fill every season. Play Ball!

I think what you’re really trying to say, Jane, is this: If the Yankees DON’T win this year, they will be fired from New York… as they should. However, remember that all-star dream-team lineup of the ’08 Tigers? Looks the Bombers may follow suit. I’m just sayin’…

Biblical, huh, Julia? Will have to check it out.

Jose was certainly an unlikely hero at the Stadium finale, Kathy, and it was nice to see. Baseball’s great that way – you never know who’ll be the hero on any given day.

Duque, that Shopaholic novel – it’s a whole serious, actually – came out long before mine. But bonehead move on my part not suing the author for using the word “Confessions” without my prior approval!

Very exciting day, Melissa. Enjoy it! (But don’t skip class.🙂

I think the division will be extremely competitive, Renegade. No telling how it will go. And you’re right about the O’s; they’ve got some players in their lineup that always give the Yankees trouble, I know that.

The Yankees will never be fired from New York, Jeff. With all due respect to the Mets, the Yankees ARE New York.

Great entry! I can’t wait for baseball! This is sooo exciting!!

Wow, Jane I think a lot New Yorkers might disargree with you. I can think of at least half of my family and they’re Irish Catholic so we got numbers. Lol, fans of the workin mans team in NY understand the ideas of grandeur of Yankee nation. Once opening day comes all the speculation will be in the past and only the box scores will matter. I say bring it on!

I’m with you, Kaybee. Cannot wait!

Yes, lots of New Yorkers would disagree, Tom. It’s a tough town for Mets fans though. The Yankees own the headlines, for better or worse.
