Will The Yankees Be Pedro’s (Sugar) Daddy?

YankeesDaddy.gifI know it sounds crazy, but this time I’m not the only one musing about a former Red Sox player joining the Bombers. Several Yankees blogs have thrown out the possibility – remote though it may be – of Pedro Martinez putting on the pinstripes. River Ave. Blues has a thread right here.

At first, I thought, Pedro? A Yankee? After all the times he plunked Jeter and got into it with Posada (remember the head-pointing incident?) and ended up wrestling with Zim?
post.jpgClemens was despised by most Yankees when he was an opposing pitcher and yet he ended up a hero in the clubhouse. So maybe Pedro could mend fences.
But the Pedro who dominated with the Red Sox
pedro.sox.jpg
is not the Pedro who was injury-riddled and innings-stingy with the Mets.
pedro.mets.jpg
At 37 years old, he’s coming off a bad year. Who knows how much he’s got left in the tank at this point?
And yet, doesn’t that description sound eerily similar to the guy the Yankees have tried to sign for $10 million?
AndyPettitte8.jpg
Would it really be so outrageous to throw a one-year deal at Martinez and see what he could give us? The Marlins aren’t interested in him. Neither, it appears, is anyone else. His agent is also Mo’s agent. Maybe…
Wait. Am I nuts? We need a pitcher who can eat innings, not fade after four and blow out the bullpen. We should hand the #5 spot in the rotation to
hughes.jpg
or
aceves.jpg
or even
kennedy.jpg
On the other hand, wouldn’t having a veteran presence in the rotation be a good thing, in case the kids can’t get it done? And isn’t Pedro, a future Hall of Famer, a better option than we had last year with Sir Sidney?
sidney_ponson_1.jpg
Absolutely.
Or not.
Either way, I’m not losing sleep over it. Instead, I’ll lose sleep over this.

A-Rod and Kate Hudson? What about Madonna? Man I can’t keep up with all his women! The A’s need a pitcher badly but I don’t know if I would want Pedro. Are you guys gonna keep my man Swish? I swear I felt so good when Swish signed a long term deal with the A’s…then he was gone just like that. This business can sometimes drive anyone crazy.

Do you really want someone that pushed Zimmer? That was horrible. Oh well that’s Boston for ya! I was told that everyone is really nice on these blogs but it’s so hard not to go off on Boston …. so very very hard! But I’ve been good so far.

http://girlybaseballchick.mlblogs.com/

Well, Lisa, I’m just going by the NY Post (scary proposition) on the A-Rod/Kate story. I don’t know what the Yankees are doing with Swisher. Every day it’s a different rumor. We’re trading him. We’re keeping him. Who knows? So you liked him when he was with the A’s? As for Pedro, I’ve come to conclusion that anything is possible in baseball. Unlikely, but possible. And yes, we’re very nice on the MLBlogosphere. We save our venom for other sites :)

WhoWhatWhereWhenWhat?????? A-Rod and ANOTHER celebrity??? A-Rod’s trying to compete with Jeter! Man, those amorous Yankees!

So you’re more interested in A-Rod’s love life than Pedro’s next stop, Levelboss?????

no, i’m appalled by A-Rod’s amorous adventures..
and as far as Pedro – i’d rather sign Pettitte back if he’ll ever take the pauper offer of 10 million dollars (doesn’t he know that it’s like winning the lottery for everybody else? that’d be enough for Dr.Evil to put his pinky on the corner of his mouth! “ten.. MIL-yon dollars”)..
actually, i’d like to see a farm dude cement his future in the bigs – i’m talking Phil Hughes, Kennedy, or Alfredo Aceves for that fifth spot

Maybe the Yankees will have to charter a jet to travel directly back & forth to Hollywood for A-Rod?? On a more serious note…I don’t think you want Pedro. He is not the same guy who was #1 on the MLB Network’s 9 at Prime show on pitchers who dominated for a whole season. He has had too many injuries. His time with the Mets wasn’t very successful.

O RLY, A-Rod? What woman would ever want to be with him? He seems like an a-hole, what with all the running around he does and whatnot.
You know that when you show me a picture of Andy I lose all focus.

Hey, Jane …

Yes, you are #2 on the new mlblogs Leader’s List !!! … Next stop, “Number One” on the “Best Sellers” lists !!! … Way To Go !!! … Jimmy [27NYY], “BY&L”

You seem to be coveting a lot of ex-Red Sox this off-season. ;)

How odd. I’m not sure the Yankee NEED anymore pitchers, do you? But maybe another one wouldn’t hurt :)
http://kaybee.mlblogs.com

Levelboss, I think we’ll end up with a “farm dude” in the #5 spot. Trouble is, there always needs to be a Plan B in case of injuries or ineptitude. You can never have enough depth in that rotation!

The Yankees won’t have to charter a jet for A-Rod, Julia. He has his own. As for Pedro, his time has come and gone, as you say. Still, I love a good comeback story.

Didn’t mean to make you lose it with the Andy pic, Kylie :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jimmy. You’re the best.

I’m always coveting, Greg. That’s my problem. But the one I covet most is Roy Halladay, now and forever.

You’re too kind, Prince.

Is there ever such a thing as too many pitchers, Kaybee? Not in my lifetime.

Thanks for the kind words, Jane. I certainly get a kick out of your posts with the pictures telling the story haha.

Thanks back at you, Dan!

I must say that I love your blog. I just started blogging and your blog is just incredible in comparison. Re: Pedro and the Yanks. Obviously the Yankees aren’t a team in the position to take a chance and hope for the best from a player that quite frankly has become a league-average pitcher due to injury. While Pedro would add a certain amount of star-power (like the Yankees are lacking in that department!) and good veteran presence for the kids, I really think everyone would be better off by just biting the bullet and re-signing Andy. As a lifelong Dodger fan I am not emotionally attached to the Yanks therefore you must take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I just can’t justify signing Pedro unless its like 1M + incentives. Keep up the great work! Andy

heres the link to my blog! forgot to finish the url. http://dodgertalk1.mlblogs.com

There you go with the crazy talk again, Jane. Also, Kate was seen over the weekend with another sports star, some golfer guy in Hawaii. I think A-Rod could take him.

I had no clue about blogging when I started, Andy. And now everyone’s left me in the dust with Twitter, and I’m clueless about that too! I agree that the Yankees should sign Pettitte. And now that Lowe got his money from the Braves, Andy’s price just went up.

Yep, Jeff. More crazy talk about aging pitchers. On the dating front, Kate does seem to “get around.” Not that I’m judging.

I am! Judging that is…
–Jeff

Come on,
at least it wasn’t the former Mrs Federline.

Kate at least understand athletics having just split from Mr Yellow Jacket. But you never know, in a group of 10 people at a restaurant you can spark a conversation that turns into a romance, or a bromance if they are “just friends.”

Should be an interesting season with A-Rod on the prowl. Maybe Scores in NYC will have a special A-Rod’s posse area and women can come and audition for the next Mrs A-Rod in the champagne room…………….or could be worse, he could be a open mic comedian at the Comedy Store after games.

Rays Renegade

Pedro is the greatest pitcher ever…

But with an 86 MPH fastball in the AL East, I just don’t know that he will have any kind of success. If he could stay healthy enough so he can actually learn how to pitch with diminished stuff, then I would definitely give him a chance. It took Mussina time to adjust, and we wasn’t as good as Pedro to begin with. But Mussina stayed healthy enough to learn and had success. But Pedro comes out pitches, gets hit and then cannot get back out there and adjust. Instead he misses a bunch of starts and then almost has to start over. But if someone brings in Pedro as a sixth starter/reclamation project, like Smoltz, then it would be a nice acquisition, as long as it is for one season, and very little money and/or incentive based.

http://statisticianmagician.mlblogs.com/

Renegade, I think the new Yankee Stadium will have a special A-Rod Room where he can meet and greet prospective love interests. And if not, they should get started on it so it’s ready by Opening Day.

Joe, I was thinking of how Mussina learned to pitch in the AL with his stuff in the 80s. But as you point out, he was healthy and seemed to make adjustments with each outing. A reclamation project is exactly what Pedro would be. I bet someone takes a chance on him though.

PHIL HUGHES PHIL HUGHES PHIL HUGHES…. that’s my choice ;) As for A-Rod, ehh he’s a man-*****, but that’s ok as long as he’s producing for the Yankees.

Oh I finally had time to sit down and pre-order you’re book! I can’t wait. I have an oral interpretation class this semester and I think I’m going to use your book for my prose performance haha.

haha it looks like I cussed on my first comment, but I didn’t. I don’t think (W)hore is a cuss word…. oh well.

you cussed, haha!

Brit, you got censored! That’s what happens when you criticize A-Rod on this blog. Thanks so much for pre-ordering the book. You’d better check it over before bringing it to class though. If you start reading aloud, your professor will do this ****** to you.

Be good, Levelboss. No cussing.

If Pedro actually got signed and played good I think it would be the ultimate signing storyline for the year, honestly eclipsing all the other signings. He stunk on the Mets and was dominate over the Yankees so New Yorkers don’t have tons of love for this cat. To sign and be valuable and against the Sox would be unheard of. Rumor or not I don’t want to wrap my head around it. And Kate Hudson can give me a call I won’t mind!
tom
http://rockymountainway.mlblogs.com

Yeah, talk about a comeback, Tom. It would certainly be the story of the year…..Kate’s getting a lot of love from you guys!

She-Fan,

Frankly, I consider ARod an ex-Redsock. They touched him. They tainted him. Maybe that’s the problem with him. He was only theirs for a few days, but it doesn’t take long for a banana to develop hidden bruises.
el duque

He had hidden bruises before his brush with the Red Sox, duque. He was born with them. But I love him still.

“After all the times he plunked Jeter”

That would be once.

Not so sure about that, jere, but I do know he didn’t win friends in NY.
