Coming This Spring – George Steinbrenner Unplugged

We’ve all heard the stories about “The Boss” – from his hirings and firings to his run-ins with Major League Baseball. But now, thanks to Peter Golenbock, we’re about to get The Whole Story.

Peter has written numerous New York Times bestsellers, including “The Bronx Zoo” with Sparky Lyle…

“Idiot” with Johnny Damon…

“7: The Mickey Mantle Novel”…

And “Dynasty.”

Recently, Peter gave me a sneak peek at the book, which comes out on May 4th. It’s compulsively readable – chocked full of eye-popping, never-before-told anecdotes that are sure to make headlines. Unfortunately, he swore me to secrecy.

What I can tell you is that the book is a fascinating, thoroughly researched account of a complex man, and features interviews with a huge cast of memorable characters (including Steinbrenner). It’s all here – from George’s childhood to his suspensions from baseball, his stormy relationships with players and managers, and so much more.
There’s plenty to satisfy Yankee fans and Yankee haters as Steinbrenner comes across as both a bully and an icon. Put this book on your wish list. You won’t be disappointed.
In the meantime, here are a few memorable “George Moments.”

This looks like an interesting read. I love well-written biographies.

It’s interesting, Joey. No doubt about that. Love him or hate him, he’s had a wild ride.

I’m always looking for new baseball books, even if they’re not about my White Sox. I now have another one to add to my list. Thanks for making us aware of its upcoming release!

As a Red Sox fan who watched the coming and goings of Billy Martin from a far, it will be interesting to read about that and about the man behind the Yanks. Thanks for the heads up Jane.

Thanks for the heads-up! Hey, Jane and all your MLBlogs minions:

Just created an Official MLBlogs Twitter for all of us. It’s at http://www.twitter.com/mlblogs or anyone who already has a Twitter account can follow @mlblogs there. As if you need even more PR ammo for your new book! :)

ps thanks for the revisit of the Jeter/Boss ad!

I think the White Sox owner is mentioned in the book, Jen. He probably had a run in with Steinbrenner at one point. Who didn’t!

The Billy-George relationship is about as dysfunctional as it gets, Julia. When you read the chapters about them, you’ll shake your head in disbelief.

I guess I’ll have to investigate Twitter, Mark. I’ve avoided it (and MySpace and Facebook), but maybe the time has come.

Jane,
after I finish your book, I’ll be looking forward to this one. Thanks!
Two add’l things:
1. I’m extremely envious of Derek Jeter’s personal life
and
2. Is it just me, or, does Steinbrenner seem a lot like a modern day version of Vince Lombardi?

I respect Steinbrenner and his drive. I will definitely read this book.

Still lacking some vital brain cells…forgot my calling card…oops!

http://thehappyyoungster.mlblogs.com/

LOL on the brain cells, Happy. Mine are on the loose somewhere. I think Steinbrenner wanted to be Vince Lombardi. He was so contradictory. He wanted everybody to respect him, but then he’d keep doing things to infuriate people. Interesting character for sure.

Hey, Jane …

Thanks for the information on your above post about the upcoming George Steinbrenner book by Peter Golenbock … It looks like a “must-read” !!! … I read somewhere that another biography about George Steinbrenner, “Triumph and Turmoil”, written by NY Daily News baseball writer, Bill Madden, is going to be released sometime in the future … Jane, I wonder if you have any details about this Bill Madden book, that is scheduled to be published by HarperCollins ??? … The SI cover picture of George Steinbrenner, and the YouTube videos are classic George Steinbrenner images, especially, the “Steinbrenner and Billy Martin” Miller Lite ad !!! … Whatever anyone may think about Yankees owner, George M. Steinbrenner, III, in my view, he is the greatest baseball and sports owner “ever” !!! … Take care, Jane !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]

You’re right, Jimmy. There is another Steinbrenner book coming out by Bill Madden. Peter told me about it, so I guess the two books will be competing. I don’t know what’s in Madden’s though. Sorry. The video clips did bring back memories, didn’t they? I still laugh at the “Seinfeld” episode.

That’s pretty interesting! The guy has been very strange, and it would be cool to see his backstory!

Is it possible for non-Yankee fans to like George even just a little bit? I don’t think so. What’s there to like? A pompous, spoiled, blowhard bully who is as ruthless as he is annoying? Sorry. Not my cup of tea. Perhaps this book will show that he does have some human elements… who knows…

He definitely has a backstory, Kaybee. Not a happy one either.

You’re probably right, Jeff. The book wouldn’t be your cup of tea. George was everything you say and more – a total dictator – but he rescued the Yankees from years of neglect by previous owners and will be in the HOF.

I cannot wait for this book to come out. I loved his book on Mantle. George is an interesting character for so many reasons.
~G

I loved the Mantle book too, Giuseppi. It certainly generated a lot of controversy.

Ask any New Yorker born after 1945 and you’ll get plenty of stories about ol’ georgie. Trust me I know! Does look like it will be a good book to read. I’m going to have a lot of reading to do in this next year! Damn you reading, damn you. lol

I know what you mean, Tom. Damn the book I’m reading right now, which is “The Given Day,” the latest novel by Dennis Lehane (“Mystic River, “Gone Baby Gone,” etc). I’m only at the beginning, but Babe Ruth is a major character and I can’t put it down!

So this is how he expect to pay for all his trades this winter!! He expect book sales to cover the taxes. LOL.

Seriously, I’ll read it and love it I’m sure. He’s always been a great character of baseball.

Jane,
Thanks for the “A” on my report!
This book looks great! Steinbrenner seems like a very interesting guy to read about, and with a whole bunch of untold stories? Even better! It didn’t occur to me that Peter Golenbock also wrote “Idiot” which I almost bought (before the big umm… signing) and if I had, I would’ve had to burn it! That Seinfeld episode is great also!

COB, it’s a book that makes you glad you were never on the other end of one of George’s tirades, that’s for sure. He comes off as both a monster and a savvy business man.

Yep, Peter wrote “Idiot” with Damon, Elizabeth. He also wrote a book called “Red Sox Nation.” Maybe you read that one? Can’t remember when it came out.

He also wrote the underrated “Balls” with Graig Nettles, which resulted in Nettles being traded to the Padres shortly after publication in 1984.
I saw Valkyrie the other night. I liked it, but dunno if it’ll be your speed. Probably not.
http://paullebowitz.mlblogs.com/

Yeah, “Balls” was good too, Paul. Peter’s an industry unto himself with all the books he’s written or co-written. His web site is like amazon. So you liked “Valkyrie?” Maybe I’ll check it out. I love the subject and genre. I just had my doubts about Cruise in that part.
