Movie Break – “Slumdog Millionaire”

Do yourself a favor. Go see this movie.
slumdogposter.jpg“Slumdog Millionaire” has been in theaters for a few weeks, so maybe you’ve already had the pleasure. But I finally got around to seeing it this afternoon – my husband and I always try to sneak in a film on Christmas Day – and now I understand why all the reviewers have been raving. It’s amazing – my personal “Best Picture of the Year.”
It’s the story of an orphaned boy from the slums of Mumbai who survives unimaginable poverty and cruelty and somehow manages to enjoy life.

His fortunes change when he grows up and becomes a contestant on the Hindi version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” to attract the attention of the girl he loves.

British director Danny Boyle (“Transpotting”) has created a movie that explodes with color and passion and always keeps you guessing. I’m not surprised that he’s been nominated for a Golden Globe; so has the movie and the screenplay. Shot on the streets of India with unknown actors, “Slumdog” is so worth your time. Unlike most of the other Oscar contenders, this one will have you leaving the theater with a smile.
Here’s the trailer. Back to baseball tomorrow.

This is on my list of movies to see, as well as Frost/Nixon and Valkyrie. I saw Gran Torino tonight and it was amazing.

“Gran Torino” and “Frost/Nixon” are my other two favorites, Andrew. The reviews for “Valkyrie” have been pretty bad, so I may wait for the DVD on that one. I still haven’t seen “Dark Knight,” so I’m hoping they re-release it in theaters.

She-Fan,

Great, another flick that’ll reach my town in 2012.

P.S. Frank Rich loved it, too. This some conspiracy?

Thanks Jane!

You need to move, dugue. Snow and no first-run movies are good reasons to leave Syracuse.

We’re going to see Valkyrie in the next few days. The Wrestler was a virtuoso performance from Mickey Rourke and made my fiancee cry. Dunno about Slumdog; I love Danny Boyle’s more hard core films like 28 Days Later, but that’s more of a DVD/PayPerView deal for me I think. Also on the docket are Frost/Nixon; Milk; and The Spirit.

Tell me if “Valkyrie” is any good, Paul. Looks like a turkey to me. But don’t pass up “Slumdog.” Yes, it’s very Bollywood with all the colors and the rags-to-riches plot, but it’s great.

I’ve seen the lead actress on a talk show talking about the movie, but I haven’t heard much else about “Millionaire.” I do want to look into seeing it, though.

Definitely worth your time, Joey. It’s an amazing movie.

So, the wife and I went out last night to see “Slumdog Millionaire” after reading your review.

We packed up our 3 yr. old and headed to Grandma and Grandpa’s house…dropped her off and headed to the theater.

Arrived at the theater with plenty of time to spare…3 minutes before listed start time…and found no available seats!

So, we tip-toed over to the theater showing the movie “Valkyrie” and found no empty seats in that one, too!

So, we ended up seeing “Doubt” instead. Oh well. We’ll get it next time!
(I guess when you live in Wisconsin during the winter, the only thing to do is go to the movies)!!

Sorry you didn’t get to see “Slumdog,” Happy. But take heart: theaters in Santa Barbara were packed the day we went to see it. I guess lots of people go to the movies on Christmas. We had to sit in the second row from the front. My neck was killing me after sitting like that for two hours!
