Never Dull Here in Santa Barbara

Last month it was Heather Locklear who was arrested not far from my house for driving erratically.

(She kept running over her sunglasses in the parking lot of my local market.)
This weekend it was former tennis star Jimmy Connors who got the attention of law enforcement. Oh, Jimbo.

He always did have a temper. I remember those matches when he’d go off on the chair umpire. McEnroe was a hot head.

But Connors was pretty demonstrative too.

You can read what he did here. Not exactly first degree murder. It was a slow news day.
I saw him at the dry cleaners about three weeks ago.

He was having a pair of jeans altered and was very polite to the tailor. Go figure. Maybe he has too much time on his hands now. He should start his own blog or something.
In other non-earth-shattering news, I went to a screening this afternoon of “Doubt.” Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, it opens nationwide on January 8th and stars Meryl Streep.

She’s a nun at a Catholic school in the Bronx (yes, there’s actually a scene where a boy is caught listening to the Yankees on his transistor radio). She becomes suspicious of a priest who takes an interest in one of the students. Viola Davis, the actress who plays the mother of the student, was at the screening and did a Q&A with us. She’ll be nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for sure.

Here’s the trailer. I know, I know. It’s not a Ben Stiller movie. No Will Farrell or Vince Vaughn in it either and there isn’t a single special effect or flatulence joke. Still, it’s worth seeing.

Arson, evacuation, misbehaving celebrities; I think you’d better find a safer area—-Baghdad maybe.

Life would probably be quieter in New York City!

Valid points, Paul and Julia, but if I left SB I’d have nothing to blog about – at least not until somebody signs a big free agent and who knows when that’ll be?

in your celebrity-laden neighborhood, maybe you could be buddies with Penny Marshall, Jack Nicholson, Denzel Washington, Tom Brady, Martha Stewart, David Letterman, or Billy Crystal – i hear they’re all Yankees fans
then maybe they’d invite you to a luxury box at the new stadium

Don’t think I haven’t tried, levelboss. That’s partially what my book’s about – me doing my best to ingratiate myself with celebrity Yankee fans so I could score some good seats while I was on the road in ’07. Unfortunately, none of the ones you mention live near me. Letterman and Martha are in NY, and the rest are in LA most of the time. Santa Barbara doesn’t have one single famous Yankee fan. Maybe I should move after all.

Didn’t Heather Locklear live with Sidney Ponson for a year? For some reason, I associate the two.

She lived with him in secret. Whenever the Yankees had an off day, Sir Sid would fly out to LA and they’d drive up here to SB, weaving along the freeway in her Mercedes. But now they’ve both moved on, according to TMZ. She’s with Bartolo Colon and Sid’s with Tara Reid.

“She’s with Bartolo Colon and Sid’s with Tara Reid.” Book idea? It’s hard to type while laughing this hard.

Always glad to bring a little good cheer, Mark.

Hi, Jane …

In one of your above comments, you said, “Santa Barbara doesn’t have one single famous Yankee fan” … Well, Jane, you don’t give yourself enough credit … Don’t you realize, you “are” the one single famous Yankee fan in Santa Barbara !!! … and, if not now, then, you will be when your new book hits the top of the “Best Sellers” lists !!! … I’m looking forward to the release of your book, Jane !!! … Have a great day !!! … Jimmy [27NYY] … http://baseballtheyankeesandlife.mlblogs.com/

Jane,
Yes, I second what Jimmy send. Also, if you have your publisher send me an advance copy, I’ll post a review on my blog ;)

Oh, Jimmy. That’s so sweet. I just hope I’m not the ONLY Yankee fan in Santa Barbara. We’re having an event/book signing party here in February to celebrate publication, and I pray people will show up! As for the book itself, I have to warn you: I’m not on my best behavior in it. I curse like a sailor. Forgive me!

Thanks for the kind words, Greg. So in exchange for a free copy of the book, you’ll write something nice about it? I love it! The only hitch is that the publisher would have to send free copies to….Yikes. How many blogs are there on this site? That’s a lot of freebies.

She-Fan,

If your publisher is smart, he/she will send the bloggers books for review. Tell him/her that you’ll lose no customers. Bloggers are such cheap ******** that they’ll never buy them anyway. (But I will.)

Heather Colon.

Sheesh. That’s what I wear on Saturday night!

You’re just saying you’ll buy my book because I bought yours, Duque. As we speak I’m reading about Sedaris drowning a mouse.
