Congratulations, Joe

Go ahead and bask in the glow of success with the Dodgers. You earned it. No resentment from me. I’m happy for you and your team. Of course, I wish it could be the Yankees that are joining you in the second round (do you even miss us at all, Joe?), but good job sweeping the Cubs. I bet you’ll get a lot of nice phone calls from Jeter, Pettitte, Jorge, and Mo. I wouldn’t count on one from Hankenstein though.

Jane, could Torre have steered the Yankees into the postseason this year or were the injuries too much to overcome? Seemed to me that Joe Girardi didn’t do too bad of a job managing. And would Torre have missed the postseason if Manny Ramirez hadn’t forced his way out of Boston?

There are two schools of thought on that, Steve. Some believe it was Torre’s calm, never-panic demeanor that steered the Yankees into the postseason in ’07 after their horrendous first half. So maybe he could have helped them again this year. But others (and I’m in this camp) think the ’08 team didn’t make it for many reasons (injuries, mediocre pitching, individual offensive slumps, getting used to a new manager, the rise of the Rays in the division, etc) and that Torre’s presence wouldn’t have changed the result. I’ll always have positive thoughts about Torre because of his great years in NY. But without Manny in his lineup? I doubt the Dodgers are where they are now.

Ha! No calls from Hankenstein? Probably right. How about a collective Bronx “BOO” just for old time’s sake?

O.K. BOOOOOOOOO! (But I don’t mean it.)

Oh, I love Joe Torre. He seems like a pretty cool dude. But I’m pretty confident I would love any manager of any team who swept the Cubs, you know?

I have yet to come across anyone who doesn’t love Joe Torre. Or least respect him. I hope his Dodgers beat the Phillies.
