Yes, of course I figured that the Yankees wouldn’t make the postseason, but I always held out a shred of hope that we’d have a miraculous comeback. It was a fantasy, sure, but it kept me going.
Until tonight. Cliff Lee let me down. I mean, wasn’t the guy 22-2? He couldn’t manage to throw one more brilliant outing to beat the Sox? Imposter, that’s what he is! Moose notched his 19th win, despite getting hit on the right elbow, and will go for #20 at Fenway if he’s feeling O.K. But we’re done and I didn’t expect to feel this way, which is extremely heartbroken.
The minute the game was over I called a friend who had tickets to a Seal concert tonight. I said I’d go with her, even though I don’t remotely like Seal, because I needed to distract myself from baseball. It didn’t work. Our seats were amazing, but all I could think about was Jeter. How must he feel not to make the playoffs for the first time in his professional career?
Seal was deeply into dance tunes tonight – a regular disco king. By the time he launched into his first hit, “Crazy,” the crowd was on its feet and I was trying my hardest not to chant “Let’s go Yankees!” I’m clearly not very good company right now. But maybe “Crazy” will do the trick for you.
